Can you help me tell a fib??
Sorry, I know this is really dumb.
I have had a really bad cold for the last couple of days. I called in sick today, but I have been working all day long and my boss keeps contacting me.
I hardly have a voice, I am totally congested and I am hacking up a lung every 5 minutes.
What can I say that I have that is contagious and that I really need to rest for?
Strep? Bronchitis? I dont want to make it seem too too serious but I want them to knpow that I need to rest.

I would go with the upper respiratory infection or strep. Bronchitis isn't contagious.  (I've had it for 11 days  )

I would just stick to the truth. Tell them you have no voice, are congested, and keep "hacking up a lung every 5 minutes". You've done all you can for the day and need to rest now. Then stop answering the phone (or shut the ringer off) and responding to emails.

I would say that you would like to be back in full swing over the next few days so you are going to get some rest now.
