how much of your savings..

I am wondering what percentage of your savings (which includes savings accts, cd, ira's, mutual funds, stocks, etc...) you feel comfortable having as liquid cash in a savings account or as actual cash that you can access at any time to use for bills, or emergencies?

Re: how much of your savings..

well - i would consider stocks liquid bc you can sell them whenever you want.

I would keep 6-9 months of bills as "emergency" in cash form (in the highest interest rate I could find that is liquid)

Wow...your good. I know we should keep that much, but we keep about 3 or 4 months. But our situation is a little different b/c regardless of whether DH gets hurt at work or off the job (he is a cop) he gets paid. So we're not in a situation like others where they don't have unlimited sick time or if they dont work they dont get paid their full pay check...

Same here. We only feel it's necessary for us to have 3 or 4 months cash in savings. We both have secure jobs and DH actually gets unlimited sick. If something were to happen and we needed more than what's in savings we would then be able to dip into non-retirement investments.

Over 50% of our savings are in stocks & bonds that we'd be able to get out of pretty quickly if we needed.

The rest is in our IRAs, 401ks, and invested in the fund DH works for. We have to give them 30 days notice if we want to cash out, but the owner of the firm has offered low interest loans to employees instead of cashing in their shares in the fund, so that's another option for us.

Re: how much of your savings..

We have way more invested in retirement accounts than we do in liquid assets.

I would say about 20% is liquid and the rest in IRA and 401(k).

Re: how much of your savings..

Liquid assets? I can't say what percentage of my savings it would be, but what I feel most comfortable having is enough liquid savings that would cover us for 6 months for all of our bills and expenses.
