Arnold has a bad case of round worm...UPDATE
I feel like such a bad parent...
My husband called my yesterday afternoon at work to say Arnold had thrown up and it appeared that there was this little white worm in it. He said he was playing with him when all of a sudden he walked away and threw up! After that he said he was very mellow (though he seemed like that all morning).
Anyway, I told him to bag it up so that when I go to the vet I could have him take look at it. I already had a vet appointment set up for Arnold's last bordatella (sp?) booster and rabbies vaccine.
So fast forward, I get to the vet and long story short, he has round worm. The worst part is the vet said it has to be pretty bad if he's to the point of throwing up.
I feel horrible!! How could we have missed this?!
He was supposedly de-wormed at the shelter and then again with the vet! Dr. Rob said it's entirely possible it was missed by the lab but now that we caught it, it's very treatable.
So he got half a pill yesterday, he got one today and he gets the other half of the pill in 3 weeks.
I really hope this is the end of the round worm for my poor boy!

Update: 3/16/08
Thank you all for the kind words and advice, I really appreciate it.
So things got a little worse for my Arnie but now it's starting to look up.
So to recap - Thursday, we went to the vet. Friday, he was fine. Alittle less energetic than usual but I chalked that up to him not feeling that well.
Saturday rolls around and at 7am he threw up. There were all these worms in it. Horrible!! We called the vet and he told us to come in. We go, the vet checks him out and says this is all par for the course, he'll be ok. He explained that there are worms in his vomit b/c the meds are killing them so it means the meds are working. We go home... Unfortunately, he threw up 2 more times. Luckily, that was it for the day.
He hasn't thrown up since yesterday and today he had a very good day. We played outside; I had him running around and he was his usual peppy self.
I'm hoping this means we're on our way to recovery!
Again, thank you everyone! I know you've all probably been through this (or worse) but it's so nice to know I can come here to get some kind words and advice!

Re: Arnold has a bad case of round worm...
you are NOT a bad mommy!!!
Its very very very common in puppies!! Don't feel bad. Same thing happened to me with my puppy years ago---as well as kittens I had.
He's gonna be fine and you're a good mom.
eta: make sure you check his poop and that he's passing the worms!

Good point! I will be sure to check from now on.
This is gonna be gross, but how long does it usually take for them to stop poopin' out the worms?

Scout had it too - with the baby (see avatar, lol!) being only a few months old.
But he took his pills and pooped the worm(s?) out. Arnold will be fine, and no there was no way for you to know... it's quite common.
Scout had one wormy poop and that was it, but we gave him all the medicine.

Jennie, you are NOT bad parents!!
This is VERY common in dogs, esp those that come from a shelter.
Kasey had it too shortly after we first got her, we saw it in her poop. Arnold will be back to his normal playfulness in no time!!

Re: Arnold has a bad case of round worm...
Awwww, glad to hear he'll make a full and speedy recovery.
Don't blame yourself! When Peanut was a pup she was tested for all parasites as a precaution. Well, a few days after we got here there was blood in her stool and it took 3 vet visits for someone to realize she had Giardia (a parasite).
She made a full recovery and I couldn't help but feel like such a loser even though it wasn't my fault.
It seems like puppies always have so much energy it's hard to tell when there is really something wrong!

Re: Arnold has a bad case of round worm...
Riley had round worms when she was a puppy. once she got the medication she started to poop out the worms within 24 hrs. Also, you will have to pick up the poop after he goes, b/c its possible he can get reinfested and you can get them too (don't go outside barefoot)
feel better arnold

Re: Arnold has a bad case of round worm...
It's not that uncommon in puppies and the de-worming is not always effective with only one treatment.
Definitely keep an eye on his poop and bring anything questionable in to the vet.
You are an awesome pet mommy

Re: Arnold has a bad case of round worm...
DON'T feel bad. When we adopted Luna, the shelter had supposedly dewormed her and checked to make sure she was clean.
Well- she was LOADED with roundworms. It was DISGUSTING. And to make it even WORSE- she also had coccidia AND a freaking TAPEWORM. We adopted this "quiet" mellow pup to find out she was actually really sick. Thankfully, it was all caught by her first vet visit after the adoption. I couldn't believe the tranformation in her once she was cleaned out- she was a totally different pup.
I called our SPCA to complain about WHY they adopted out such a sick pup- and they were very surprised. It turns out she had come from another shelter who had made the original claims of the deworming, and apparently a follow-up had never taken place before she was put on the adoption floor.
