20/20 sex offenders
Anyone watching this? Does anyone else think it is unfair that a high school teenager who had sex with his girlfriend now for the rest of his life will have to register as a sex offender because he was 18 and she was 15? It essentially has destroyed his life. They said that there are 100's of teenagers that have to register even though the sex was consentual.
What do you think?

Re: 20/20 sex offenders
I think the sex offender website is a good thing BUT I feel bad for these high school kids who are having sex with their girlfriends.
Like the kids who were having sex he was 17 and she was 15. He is no registered for the rest of his life.
The one who was 18 can't join the army which was his dream
The one that had sex at 17 can't be a firefighter cause no one will hire him.
ETA I do not think they should have to register. Especially since the girlfriends have said it was 100% consensual

I agree. These were all high school students, half of them there were even unaware that there were such laws. This is something that should definitely be brought up in health classes. I actually teach in a high school and I would bet money on the fact that most kids do not know they are committing a crime. While they laws have good intentions, they should not be used in this manner.

Re: 20/20 sex offenders
I actually have a friend who is serving 4 years for this. He was dating a girl when he was 22 and she was 19...or so he thought. Turns out when they broke up that she was 16 not 19. The judge made it clear to him that he should have known her real age (her parents usded to drive her to hsi house everyday-she said she was sacred to drive so my friend never questioned it)
So after the breakup when she said he raped her he got arrested and went to court and had to admit to raping her even though it was consenual sex. she was underage--he now has to register as a sex offender and hes on 5 year probation once he gets out of jail.
his life is FOREVER ruined.

i find this to be messed up on many levels, why were the parents driving their daughter to a 22 year olds house for her to date, what did they think he would do with her, also if they say they didn't know he was 22 then its possible he didn't know she was 19, i'm not saying they shouldn't have been dating, i can't say i never dated someone that much older when i was a teen, but really most 22 yr olds are having sex and will do so with their girlfriends however old they are and the parents should have been more responsible than to drive her over there

I totally agree. Maybe all along the gf was lying to her parents about his age and once they broke up she told them. They dated for I believe a year. Parents are the ones who made her press charges.

Me 3! I agree that sex offenders should register, but this is not a sexual preditor. This is 2 young adults making adult decisions. It was consensual......can you imagine if EVERY high school relationship was reported?

I agree. That is not what the law was intended for. It's such a shame, and after getting out of prison are more likely to lead a life of crime because they can't get jobs and are now shunned by society. It's sad.

Re: 20/20 sex offenders
I do therapy with juvenille sexual offenders (sexually abusive youth) in a residential treatment center. The boys I work with are between the ages of 11 and 18 (those that are 18 were placed in the program before turning 18). Each of the boys are charged with sexual crimes as juveniles, so their records will be sealed once they complete their treatment, unless they try to apply for the police force/military/fire department.
I am not sure that I can speak from an open-minded standpoint because I see what these boys are capable of. While most of the boys are there for committing crimes against other children, every once in a while we get a boy who is charged with his crime after having sex with a same-aged/similar ages girl. Throughout the treatment, it is discovered how much was consentual. 99.9% of the time, that boy admits to having used coersion/manipulation to sexually act out.
I know that the boys I treat are not "normal" teenages when it comes to sex, so take my comments from where they come from. I do agree that there are so many teens that don't even know that they are committing a crime, and this should probably be reviewed in middle school and high school. I get frustrated with people who don't want to recognize that this stuff does actually happen...even little kids can be sexual predetors. The earlier it can be addressed in schools and in the home, the more we can prevent.
