Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

I had three yorkies growing up, but never that small. I've never heard of that. Nine weeks sounds a little young though.

Being that small does not mean they are hypoglycemic but they can become hypoglycemic. You have to watch to make sure they eat and drink enough and there is this stuff called enervite, nutri cal and a bunch of other products that you can give them to keep thier sugar up. Puppies, especially tiny ones like that, love to run and play and they get themselves all worked up that such a young puppy like that can go into hypoglycemic shock. As long as you keep an eye on the puppy, make sure he's eating, drinking enough, you can also tell if thier gums are really pale to give them a little sugar.

Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

That is really young to be taken from the mother, and if it was from a pet store I would question if the pup is even that old (unless the vet confirmed it). I am not sure if this is a breed characteristic, but I would think that there is any danger in altering the puppy's diet too soon, like taking him off his mother's milk and feeding solid dog food.

With a puppy that small and young, you have to make sure that he/she eats several times a day and is watched. It is very common for a puppy that small to go into Hypoglicemic shock. The main thing we made sure when looking for a puppy was that she was big enough that she could be home during the day alone and not go into shock.

My friend has 4 Yorkies and this did happen to one of them. ALWAYS try to keep Karo Syrup in the house and when you see signs of anything, give them that ASAP and call the vet.

Just wanted to add, this can happen with any breed puppy, not just Yorkies.

Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

I got my yorkie from our breeder at 7 weeks old and she ate 3 times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and we never had any issues.

Take her to a vet and see what they say.

Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

I have 2 yorkies...I brought home my little girl at 2 lbs. and she was 8 wks. old. I had to give her something (forgot what it is called...it is in a tube...but it is a sugar supplement) every few hours until she got bigger. I had to do the same with my other yorkie when i got him until he got bigger. Totally normal!

ETA: It was called karo syrup...just remembered.

Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

all small dogs can be hypoglicemic,
our vet told us to put a pinch of sugar in its water bowl (which i didnt but would have if I saw puppy being lethargic)
so just watch him and make sure to feed it 3 times per day and maybe a little peanut butter on the roof of mouth will keep levels up!!! Enjoy puppy~~~~ Yorkies are great....

Re: Yorkie Puppy- Hypoglicemic?

My friend had a yorkie puppy. We were driving from Florida back up to NY making plenty of stops. However we thought that she was just panting only to find out to our horror (when we got back to NY) that she was having mini seizures the whole way home because she was hypoglicemic.

It's better to be safe then sorry and take them to the vet.
