Those who took the GRE

How did you prepare for the test? There are so many different prep classes out there, and since they are all Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I want to make sure that I am paying for a good class. I am terrible in math, so if you know any that specialize in helping those who are horrible like me, that would be even better.

TIA!

Re: Those who took the GRE

I work for Kaplan and would be happy to speak with you further about the options. I can recommend some great teachers here as well (I am their manager).

Feel free to FM me for my info.

Most courses will focus on math a lot because many GRE students are out of school and need more work on that part.

I got the Princeton Review book and used it as if I were in the class. I did practice logic and math problems every day, and took a lot of practice tests. And I got a perfect score on the logic section when I took the test! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Just goes to show, it's all about practice - the same types of questions come up over and over again.

Re: Those who took the GRE

i didn't take a prep course... i had already taken the LSATs and i took a kaplan course to prepare for that, so i was able to use a lot of skills i learned. the LSAT course i took lasted a while, about 6-8 weeks, and was $1100.

ETA: i was VERY happy with my experience at kaplan.

Same here. Just do the practice questions and the CD that comes with and you'll be fine. Piece of cake Chat Icon

Re: Those who took the GRE

Definitely get the CD and practice with that. I took the test when I was a senior in college, and then again 13 years later. I practiced with a book both times. I saw a drop in my scores, which made no sense, since my math score dropped and I just finished an engineering degree and was using math daily. I am convinced that the drop was due to me not being familiar with the computer program and the sequencing of the questions. I was only used to the paper exam, since that was what I took the first time, and I think it hurt me.

Re: Those who took the GRE

FYI, there is no longer a logic section on the exam. It's math, verbal, and writing.

I have to echo what others have said. No matter how you decide to prep, you want to make sure that you have access to Computer Adaptive exams. This is the format the exam is given in. It's really important to not practice only on paper, this will hurt you on test day.

FYI, Kaplan offers free Practice Tests (most of the companies do), so you can take a free test that doesn't count and get an idea for what is on the exam. We are actually in the middle of National Practice Test month, so there are lots of these going on now. You can see them at www.kaptest.com/practice.

Re: Those who took the GRE

bought a test prep book, and did 2 practice exams, so I knew the exam layout..... nothing more.

it's hard to study for that exam... it's supposed to represent common knowledge stuff.

(I did take it in 1997 though.... when there was a math, english, and logic section... the format has changed... they replaced the logic section, which was much like an IQ test, with a writing section, I believe.)

don't sweat it. I took it at 7 am on jan 2. I was wiped from partying, and still got into my top choice school w/o any problem. it's really your transcript and CV that matter
good luck!

oh, I should also add that I was one of the first students to take the computerized exam... I frankly didn't find it that different from the paper exam.

Re: Those who took the GRE

I think Kaplan has the best course

Full disclosure: I work for Kaplan, but I have had other opportunities in the industry and have chosen to stay with Kaplan because their program and materials are really the best.

I took the Kaplan GRE Course and as Rebecca said most people have been out of school for a long time so they really go over the math.

Good Luck! Chat Icon

ETA:

A big part of doing well on the test is understanding how the CAT works. The test is adaptive and therefore understanding the differnece between an adaptive test and a linear or paper test is going to make a big difference in your scores. A good prep class will address this as much as content and other test taking strategies.

Re: Those who took the GRE

I got the Princeton review book. I think the most helpful thing was the cd that had the practice tests that you take on the computer. I just did a bunch of those and felt much more prepared.
