High School Teacher Couldn't Read
John Corcoran graduated from college and taught high school for 17 years without being able to read, write or spell. Corcoran's life of secrecy started at a young age. I heard this on the radio this morning.
He cheated his way through school.
Now he wants to be a mentor for others to make sure everyone has the opportunity to learn to read.
I thought everyone DID have the opportunity- including him- he just evaded teachers and cheated. Granted- the teachers should have noticed.
I don't know- I don't think its commendable that he cheated the system.

totally agree.
I just can't understand how he got through COLLEGE..
I mean, I've known some dumb asses that got their degrees so I understand getting through
but not reading and writing???

my father is legally blind without his glasses. he graduated college with a BFA without being able to read, b/c they allowed his tests to be spoken word. his teachers were aware of his condition though, and he was required to actually LEARN the information, just not through reading.
my mom would read his textbooks into a tape recorder so he could study.
I didn't learn my father was illiterate until he started going to a literacy program at the library.
he can now read.
I cannot imagine what it would be like to go through life without knowing how to read. it is one of my favorite things.

See now i think this is totally different. your father had a condition that hindered his ability to read.
by the way this sounds--this guy hid it--and just plain cheated, cause it was easier. at some point someone should have noticed or he should have said "i have reading issues"
