Is there a secret to using ABS brakes...
because I nearly killed myself on the way back from work and then myself and my girls on the way back from my parents!
I guess I was skidding on some snow and I hit the brakes and they start making a clicking/grinding noise which I have never heard before--I also have never driven this car in the snow before today. I asked my dad and he said keep your foot down, don't let up on the brakes. OK, so on the way back home with my DDs, I was on a narrow, snowy road when someone suddenly backs out of their driveway. I hit the brakes, hear the sound again, keep my foot down...it doesn't stop; in fact, the whole car doesn't stop!!! Immediately, I thought, "I'm about to crash." Luckily, I had a very little room to maneuver and escaped an accident by a hair. The car ended up stopping properly at the next light.
What is the deal??? Can someone help me?

Re: Is there a secret to using ABS brakes...
remember back in the day before ABS brakes and you wanted to stop and you pumped the break? That's what you are hearing- the ABS breaks pumps the breaks- basically allowing the tires to grip the road- if you just slammed on the breaks (without the ABS) the tires lock up and you skid. Unfortunately in snow/ice you are going to skid a little ABS or not.. but that clicking/grinding noise is what you are supposed to hear- just keep constant pressure on the breaks when you are trying to stop- but you still need to manuever out of the accident.

Thanks! So evidently, the problem is not with the brakes, but the tires...or just bad roads.

if I remember correctly I think before ABS brakes you had to pump them so get them to properly grip or something to that effect - now with ABS you just hold you foot down and it does the on and off for you - that is the sound that you hear.

The noise is the ABS working so that you can still steer to control the car. Still scary though...
