I cannot take this metformin anymore
My stomach has been a mess the past few days  I have been watching what I eat, but nothing seems to help. I take the two pills (1000mg) at night with no problems, but the next day, by lunch time, my stomach is a mess. It's 7:30 and my stomach is still upset  Any advice???

I'm sorry, I know it can be really awful. I always have immodium with me.
Have you tried taking the pills apart? Like take one with breakfast or lunch and one with dinner? I found in the beginning if I took two at the same time, my stomach was a mess.
I have to admit its still not perfect. I have days when it is terrible. Its especially bad if I eat a lot of sugar. I don't find too many problems with carbs, but definitely sugar. Which stinks because I love my desserts!

I took it for about a year back in 2001, then stopped, but expect to be back on it following my glucose tolerance test next week. I can't recall the specific effects I had.
Have you visited the boards on soulcysters.com? They have an entire board just about metformin.

The nurse told me to take the pills together (not really sure why), so I'm trying to stick with that. The stomach upset is not immediate. I take it with dinner and usually am okay at night. It's the next morning and definitely around afternoon time that it hits me. This whole thing S***S!!!!

I would try taking them at different timest. Call your doctor and ask if you want to make sure its ok, but I've been doing this since I've been on it, which is about 9 months now. I actually just recently started taking 1 with breakfast and 2 with lunch. In the past this would have been a disaster but now I guess I am used to it enough.

ITA w/ this. There's no benefit to my knowledge from taking them together. I have always broken them up and taken a them in the morning then the night. It's less of a shock to your system. HTH!

I've been on 1500mg since Sept. and I never take them together. I take one pill with each meal. As far as I know there is really no benefit of taking them together.......1000mg is 1000mg whether you take it in one shot or spread it out over the course of a day.
I found eating more whole grains really helped. I'm sure it will get better......lots of luck!!

Maybe your dr can switch you to the extended release? I've been on both types of Metformin and found the XR is a lot more gentle on my stomach.
