At our hospital if you use a midwife you automatically get a private room with private bathroom!

I was told at the time of delivery you can request one. You can not do so until after you deliver and they will ask you. North Shore has about 10 private rooms and 2 suites. We did our hospital tour Saturday. They were packed! 42 babies born last week!! One suite was made into a double to accomodate everyone!

I'm delivering in the city (Beth Israel). When I filled out my pre-registration, they have an option to reserve a private room or suite. It's about $500 extra a day.
You can always call the hospital and ask. I don't think you necessary have to wait until delivery.

If you find out otherwise let me know. But this is what I was told when I asked several people on Saturday. They can not do it before delivery cause they do not know when you will be done laboring in comparision to others there. Do you know that they are starting construction soon and by 2010 all rooms will be private.
P.S. The private room is $530, one suite was $750 and the other suite was $1,000.

I am delivering at Columbia in NYC and you have to wait until you deliver. It is that way for the most of the city hospitals.

My hospital only has private rooms (acutally most of the hospitals here (GA) only have private rooms.. I'm very lucky, never experienced otherwise.
