Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

You could try behavioural training...but honestly, if you want Dharma back - you might want to give her back to the shelter while you still can.
Then at least they will know to place her in a home with no other dogs.Chat Icon

Must have missed that.

I thought she couldn't have dogs in her new place.

Does she (Dixie) have a history of being aggressive with other dogs?

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

I don't remember how old she is, but were you told of any history of aggression or were you told if she had lived with other pets / dogs before? Pit bulls can be great dogs, but aggression toward other dogs is unfortunately somehwhat common in the breed. I have nothing against pits at all - I think the vast majority of them are great dogs, especially when properly socialized from a young age. However, this sort of behavior is unfortunately not uncommon. I'd speak to a behavioral specialist, who hopefully can help with socializing her... but keep an open mind. You may hear from a specialist that she'd do best in a home with no other dogs.

Good luck, and sorry to hear you're having problems with her. Chat Icon I hope it all works out!

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

thanks all

well i am just going to call the shelter and see who they recomend for training.

she ges along FINE with dharma, lukin and tinky. just fine!

shes good now on the leash wth other dogs.

i think itll take alot of hard work and training but we'll get there

im taking her to kevins now to play and socialize with the 3 beasts.

im looking at 2 apartments today, hopefully ill ake one and then can bring Dharmie back with me to the new apt! cant wait for that!

right now i still have only dixie.... thats going to change as soon as i move into my own place... i just want to work on trainging her as best i can alone before mixing other dogs into the pot.

also, she was caged with another dog at the shelter, so i know she gets along with most dogs.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

Jess, I don't want to alarm you or give pits a bad name, but I would NOT let Dixie alone with your other pets right now. I've known dog-aggressive pits that were fine with certain dogs and then the aggression would surface out of nowhere. It's rare, but it does happen. I'd keep them separated when no one is around to supervise -- at least until you've had someone come in to evaluate the dog's potential aggression.

Good luck! I hope you find someone who can help.

ETA - I apologize. I saw only Dixie is living with you right now. That would mean she is supervised with the other pups. Sorry for not reading more carefully.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

If she exhibited this behavior more than likely it will happen again. It does not mean she is dangerous or vicious, it only means she is animal aggressive. Do not allow her allow with other dogs and monitor her play time. If you are concerned when she plays with other dogs keep her leash on her collar so that is something does happen you can quickly stop. I advocate for pit bulls, owning one myself, sadly not all are animal friendly.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

thanks guys, she had a ball with the 3 little ones. seriously, it was the happiest ive seen her yet. she got excited and stried to play with them.

then i came home and she got her bone and was tossing it around.... this is the first show of 'play' she has since i got her on saturday.

slowly she is coming out of her shell,.

like i said she is fine on the leash, it was the one time i took her off that she wasnt too friendly. so for now ill keep her on the leash when around other dogs.

well when i move into my new place (feb 1st) i think i will be bringing dharma with me.

i am thinking of doing it in sloooow doses.

see, the best part is that my new place in like a 30 second walk from kevins!!!! so all the dogs will be together ALOT of the time. im thinking if i know im going to be gone for a long time (the nights i work) ill bring dharmie back to kevs for the night.... until i feel 100% comfortable having them alone.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

Please be careful. My dog gets along great with other dogs, but because there is a history of ONE event of aggression with a person (me), I will never leave him alone with another dog and I won't get a second dog. That event happened before he was neutered and before he had extensive training, but I still take no chances.

Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrreat

No NOT leave her loose with other dogs when you are not home. You have been forewarned by the dog what she can do, PLEASE heed the warning. If you adopted the dog from a shelter please contact them for advice. .
