stinky poop

My cats have extremely stinky poop. Is there anything I can do about this, or is it just a fact of life?

LifeIsGreat is right - the food is generally the #1 culprit.

Are Reese & Ramsey on kitten food? Our vet told me that if you switch them to adult too soon it can make them gassy & stinky. If they are on kitten already one that I have tried that kittens seemed to do well on was the Wellness.

If you do switch the food, just do it gradually (like over minimum 1 week's time) mixing the new in small amounts into the old, gradually increasing the amount of new or they could get diarrhea.

Really? They are on adult food now, it was too hard to feed them all separate foods, they were all eating each other's food anyway. I asked the vet who said it was ok to do this, he never said anything about it making them gassy and stinky!

Re: stinky poop

What brand food are they on? Do you feed them dry as well? Water as opposed to milk. You would be surprised how many people think it is okay to give dogs and cats milk. Since they both have smelly poop I would think it is the food. Cats poop generally smell bad, could it be you are just more observant of the smell? Also, have you changed the brand litter you used and perhaps it is not absorbing odor?

They eat Iams food, which is what the vet said we should feed them.
They only eat dry food, we give them a can occasionally as a treat.
We never give them milk, they only drink water.
I guess I could just be really observant of the smell. We are using a different littter right now since they just had surgery, we're using the yesterday's news stuff.

I wouldn't be able to tell you if its one of them with stinky poop, or all of them. It all looks the same to me.Chat Icon

Maybe the surgery is affecting their belly? I know in humans this can be a side affect of anethesia.

Could it be the same for cats?

If they said it was OK, I am SURE it is - the feral kitten I had was only about 4 months old and they said it could cause it.

From what you said about the yesterday's news, it could be that - maybe it was stinky before, you just didn't smell it Chat Icon

Re: stinky poop

The Yesterdays News stuff doesn't cover the smell - that's why it's so bad.
Did the vet tell you to change the litter after the surgery? We have never changed Espresso's litter, even after he was neutered.Chat Icon

Yes, they told me to use shredded paper, and I didn't have any in the house so I asked if yesterday's news was ok and they said yes.
Maybe its more for my girl cat who had an actual incision.

Re: stinky poop

As I mentioned, it is smelly to begin with. You mentioned you changed the litter and that may be it..perhaps it does not cover and absorb as the other product you used.
