I say you get the puppy & tell your MIL this is her grandchild and leave your Ryan alone.

Honestly, if you are going to get one, it may be in your best interest to get a puppy instead of a dog. That way, you can train the puppy how to properly act around Ryan. Plus, he'll grow up with Ryan, so they'll both be used to eachother. A dog might be too set in its ways and may be hard to train how to behave around Ryan, or even worse, be jealous of him. A puppy wouldn't be jealous.

Having a puppy is like having another baby, don't do it!!! I would save this for when Ryan is a little bit older and you have less stress in your life.

Just when Ryan falls asleep, the puppy starts barking....
I'd wait a few years!

Re: Baby + puppy=???
I would think that baby + puppy = MAJOR STRESS!!
Housebreaking a puppy alone is very stressful. And even though it could go quickly, it's definitely a job in itself. Also... puppies purchased/adopted at the optimal age (8 - 10 weeks old) don't exactly "sleep through the night" either. The whining might keep the baby up!
I've thought alot about this because DH also wants a puppy and we decided not for AWHILE.
As a matter of fact, we had two dogs when Jake was born. Our Bull Mastiff and my pommie. The pommie started acting up as soon as the baby was born, plus her barking was ear piercing and would wake the baby. Plus we had enough p!ss and sh!t (pardon my french) to clean up with the baby much less adding in her newly developed "accidents" aka cries for attention. So we had to send her to live with my Mom for awhile.

Ok MIL comments aside - I have to agree with everyone else. It's hard enough keeping Ryan entertained. Puppies can be tough - picture trying to train him to be housebroken with Ryan going for the newspapers.

Totally agreed! I have a wonderfully loving and good 1.5 yr old pup and I have moments EVERY DAY where I want to pull every strand of hair out of my head. He'll JUST get to sleep and she'll bark - he'll be screaming and she'll start barking - I can't lay him on the couch because I have to worry that she'll jump up on him - I can't put him in his swing without supervising because she'll want to lick all over him... it is alot of work - if I didn't love her like another child she'd've been gone the day we came home from the hospital...
My advice - wait until Ryan's older to get a puppy - he'll appreciate it more and it'll be much easier on you!

I agree! This is why we haven't gotten a dog, because I know it'll all be on me to train it. What about a cat? They are pretty easy

No way on the puppy with the baby! This of the chewed couch legs, going to the bathroom in the house, slobbering all over baby's things!

I would wait on the puppy marissa is alittle over a year and I am still holding off on the puppy for my own reason and that is I dont' have a backyard to let the dog out at nite and I would have to walk the dog and since my FH works nites I would have to leave marissa alseep in the apartment alone as I go and walk the dog I think not so I am holding off but I would love one and peopel still tell me that she is too young for a puppy but I don't think so yeah they a re alot of work I know so I think next year we will be in a better place and will be able to get one

Re: Baby + puppy=???
Okay..I didn't have a puppy, I has two bunnies and I had to get rid of them because they were too much work. These are animals confined to a cage that I could take care of. Imagine a puppy running around everywhere. I would say don't do it!!

Re: Baby + puppy=???
If you're feeling stressed already and feeling that your DH is lazy (from your other post), then you do not want a puppy, IMO.

Re: Baby + puppy=???
I say "Not now." We have two cats that my DH got a couple of years before we got married. Now he's sorry he got them. Our daughter constantly pulls on one cat's tail and tries to climb on him like a horse. She sits on him and pulls his hair and the stupid cat sits there. All he has to do is go downstairs through his stupid cat door to get away but instead he takes it. We're afraid one day the cats are really going to scratch her bad or something. We tell her NO but she doesn't listen. She just thinks he's a big stuffed animal. Even my DH says he would give the cats to someone else if they wanted them but he obviously won't bring them to a shelter.
