Ok so now I have metformin questions
I was prescribed 500mg's 3 times a day.
What are the do's and dont's with this medication? I know I hear all these stories about upset stomach... are there foods that I should stay away from?

Jen - Everyone is different, but I found if I stay away from sugars and carbs, I'm okay. I've been on it just about a year now, so if I do eat something I shouldn't, I can pretty much handle it now.

Re: Ok so now I have metformin questions
I did a complete overhaul on my diet. I'm VERY careful about the amount of sugar that I eat. I also eat about 70% of my diet as protein.
I've only been on the Met for about a week and a half, but so far I've only had one bout of nausea, and I think it was because it was the first time I had doubled up on pills.
So far, not too bad!

Re: Ok so now I have metformin questions
I have not changed my diet at all. I do have days when my stomach is bad, but not bad enough to make me change what i eat. I already ate pretty healthy, so even if I did change my diet I wouldn't have to change too much. I still eat sweets and carbs. What I would recommend, though, Jen, is not to start on three pills rightaway. I actually had been off the met for about two weeks because of getting an HSG. I am taking one pill for a few days and then will go to two for a week and then back up to three. I also find it helps if I spread them out through the day and take them with meals. My worst times have been when I take more than one pill at a time. The one thing I found out I can't have while on met is alchohol. One night I drank a few glasses of wine and that was the worst reaction I have had. Since then, I haven't touched any alchohol at all.
Good luck!!
ETA: and I always have immodium on hand, just in case!!

Re: Ok so now I have metformin questions
I didnt change my diet either but I do notice if I have alcohol it will affect me. The stomach issues were noticeable right in the beginning but now being on it for a few years I don't notice any difference.
Interesting thing the eye dr told me though-that Metformin can make your eyesight worse. Has anyone else noticed this?
