pediatrician's role

I feel dumb. We live in NJ. Last night my SIL asked me if we had a pediatrician lined up. I asked her that I wanted to know who she used for her kids and then also wanted to ask my neighbors. We are delivering 30 minutes from our house and she delivered at the same hospital. In the end, we thought having a pediatrician 5-10 minutes away would be better than someone 30 minutes away.

She said that we need to let the pediatrician know when we are delivering because they check the baby once it is delivered. Is that true? I thought that the first tiem you woudl visit would be for the second week appointment. So confused aboutteh pediatrician's role.

Thanks.....

Re: pediatrician's role

I think of the pediatrician you choose is not affiliated with the hospital you deliver at then you just have the hospital pediatrician check out your DC and followup with your reg. ped. I am not sure about this since I am just starting my ped search but that was my understanding. HTH.

Re: pediatrician's role

Im pretty sure the ped will come see the baby when its born, if yours isn't affiliated with the hospital, then the house ped will check the baby out. where are you in NJ? (I only ask because I am in NJ as well!!)

your baby will be examined by a pediatrician soon after it is born. if your amniotic fluid is meconium stained, then the ped will actually be present at your delivery to ensure that the baby doesn't breathe the meconium into its lungs.

the ped that you choose for your baby will want to see the baby for its first visit sometime in the week after it's born. mine saw ds when he was 5 days old. that first week is tricky because the baby initially loses weight; the ped wants to make sure that the weight starts coming back up.

ideally you should have a pediatrician in mind before you give birth, so that you don't have to scramble to find one when you've just given birth. having said that, most peds will fit you in for a newborn visit even if you don't contact them before the birth.

hope that helps!

yes, that is correct. my ped was affiliated with the hospital I delivered at, so he saw our DD, but it is not a big deal at all if they don't.
