Questiosn about credit cards and fraud
I think DH is the victim of credit card fraud (just another thing to ruin my day)!. Chase called today looking for a credit card payment. First of all my husband doesnt have a Chase card, I do and it has been payed off. So after going back and forth we realize whoever took out this card used my husbands SS#, name and birthdate but a different address. So of course it is the weekend and noone is around from the fraud dept. to speak too until Monday. They gave us the city that was on file for the car, which is S. Ozone Park, but not the exact address. They also wouldnt tell us what the credit limit was on this card or any charges. My husband is a cop in NYC and he said that at his old precinct that had a problem with this before...an admin. guy was stole a cops SS# and was ordering computers, etc. DH is concerned the same thing has happened to him b/c in no way does the NYPD keep SS# and other personal information secure. Everyone and anyone can see them.
Now my question is, what do we do? Obviously file with the fraud dept. but this will still show up on our credit report I assume? I want to know who this person is! How long will this processs take? Does anyone have any experience with this?
Another thing is...I was talking to my dad about it and he told me credit card companies shouldnt even have SS#'s??? To be honest, I haven't applied for a new credit card in so long I have no idea...but I think they need your SS# to apply. I called back the number from my caller ID and it was Chase so it is legit. This is just crazy.

Re: Questiosn about credit cards and fraud
That stinks. Someone once tried to open a credit card with my name, and bank account number, but something didn't match up, so the CC company sent me a letter.
When I called them to let them know it was attempted fraud and asked for the address of the person that tried to open the account, they said they couldn't...they had to protect their privacy!!
It suc ks, I hope it works out for you!

Having just gone through this - here's the deal:
When you file with the fraud department they will send you an affidavit that you have to fill out. They should notify the Credit Agencies, but I did it myself anyway. Just go to any of the Credit Agencies - Experian, Transunion, whatever and file a report. This will show on your credit file and release you of any responsibilities towards the card.
Good luck...it sux, I know....

Great advice. I would also add a fraud alert to your DH's credit card file. It will be a PITA when your DH applies for credit since they will take him through lots of security verification & he won't be able to do make certain on-line transactions i.e., get his credit report instantly....but it's worth it since he has already been a victim.
I added the fraud alert to my account when my purse was stolen some years ago. Kids tried to use my credit card to buy candy at a local gas station.
ETA - another tip is to use your grandma's maiden name when they ask for your mom's maiden name. My mom has been married a couple of times but it's still not that hard to find out her maiden name so I always use grandma's maiden name when asked that kind of "security" question.
