I know it would cause chaos, but I'd rather have that than fear for my life every time I go to mall/theatre etc. I don't know if anyone else fears something like this happening when they go to a mall/movie theatre etc, but I do.

I can't help but wonder if there is something that can be done to prevent this from happening again. It's so sad and sickening.

While what happened was an absolute tragedy, I don't feel that metal detectors are necessary in malls.

It wouldn't have changed much in this case. He just would have shot the guards at the entrance, then continued shooting inside the mall.

It would put a huge financial burden on malls. One, there would be a big $$ investment for the metal detectors, and guards at every entrance, plus people would be a lot less interested in going to the mall if they had to deal with the hassle of metal detectors.

I don't think Americans would go for that. We're too much about convenience and freedom to come and go.

Unfortunately there have been many studies on the use of metal detectors to deter crime. Most have been centered around using them in schools... similar to malls, movie theaters where you have large groups of people and multiple exits.

It doesn't work. Too many people to search and too many exits to outfit.

Schools that do have them usually have all students go through one entrance but with most schools having 1500 plus students they randomly select students to go through the dectors.

Students have also been known to sneak weapons to their friends through bathroom windows or to try to enter through loading docks, cafe kitchens.

Same would happen with a mall.
Too many people, too many extrances=too many possibilities.

No, I don't think so. These ocassions are few and far apart if you think about how many malls, schools, public places there are in the world. Not everyone should be punished because of a few nutters out there.
