question (spinoff) to where you live?

How important to you is the make up of the neighborhood...

for example - Jewish people - do you live in a "jewish area"?

Or is it more important to you to have diversity - or none of the above...you just like the house and the 'hood and you don't care who your neighbors are?

For me...I do live in a jewish area (I am jewish). It is important to me to do so...But because I am in queens I still feel there is a lot of diversity so it's the best of both worlds.

The most important thing to me was the quality of the school district.

I'm a mutt, and DH is italian, but I don't believe there are many italian neighborhoods down here in NC!!

I am moving to a neighborhood that has a Christmas tree and Menorah! Chat Icon Chat Icon I could not be happier. I care much more about my quality of life including neighborhood safety, proximity to police/fire/hospital and other such neccesities. If my neighbors are Buddhist, Catholic, Jewish, Baptist or whatever power to them. I might be turned off if they practice voodoo, though. Chat Icon

Where I live there is a Jewish Neighbourhood and then there is the rest of Manchester. My poor Jewish son is going to go to a Church of England School most likely! Scary...

I live in Pittsburgh, in a highly Jewish area, many of our neighbors are orthodx jews and I could walk to at least 5 temples.

Dh and I are both CatholicChat Icon Apparently it doesnt matter to me.

Re: question (spinoff) to where you live?

We rent for now so all we need is a safe place to live amongst good people and we do. When we buy a home, a school district will be the number one factor in a neighborhood choice.

Is it important for us to live in diversity? Absolutely. However, I do not wish to be the only Jewish family on my block when we purchase a home. I want my children to know their culture and to be able to walk down the street so they can do their Hebrew School homework with a friend. We cannot do that now if we had children. I grew up in a neighborhood that had Jewish people living alongside other ethnicities and we shared in each other's cultural celebrations. This is what I would like for our future.

DH and I are the only other Jewish people on our block. We are not shunned or treated poorly, nor are we showered with neighborly gestures - its like people do not know what to do with usChat Icon.

Truth be told, most of the "Jewish" neighborhoods that we would consider if we were in the market to buy a home, we are in no position to afford at his time or any time soon. We will more than likely purchase a home in a good school district in close proximity to a Conservative temple where we will become members.

We live in a diverse, middle class neighborhood with the best school district we could afford, which is exactly what we wanted.

Re: question (spinoff) to where you live?

Before I moved in with DH I lived on West 156th street and was the only non Dominican person in my building for three years. I LOVED my neighbors! It was so lively and wonderful.

We live in Sutton Place which is basically very white. I miss how lively my old neighborhood was. The only great thing about this neighborhood is when we need to send our kids to school the public schols around here are good. If I had my choice I woud live in a neighborhood with more diversity though...

I would not choose to live in an area that's predominantly a religion/ethnicity other than my own. I'm fine with a diverse and balanced mix.

Re: question (spinoff) to where you live?

When we were house-hunting we def wanted to find a good neighborhood. It didn't matter to us what the ethnicity of our neighbors are, we were just concerned with a good school district and a nice area that didn't have a lot of crime. Of course, every place has things happen from time to time, but for the most part I think we did pretty well!!

Re: question (spinoff) to where you live?

While a great school district was important to us when looking for a house, the make up of the neighborhood was as well. When we decided to bid on our house, I called the local synagogue to enquire about their congregation (how large, were these families local to the town/neighborhood, etc) because this was just as important to us.
