Re: Those with older non-custodial step children...

What do you mean by unrealistic expectations? I should think the fact that they are excited is a GREAT thing.

Re: Those with older non-custodial step children...

I have 2 step-sons and we have them quite often. Im not worried in the least bit about anything related to the boys. They are thrilled that they are going to have a baby sister and this makes me so happy. I only worry that the boys will maybe feel as if they are not getting as much attention from me and DH. Otherwise, I couldnt be happier with how the boys feel in regards to the new baby, I think it has actually brought me and my step-sons closer together. I love to hear all their plans for the baby.

ETA: DH and I only argue about his boys when it comes to the fact that they dont listen very well, but nothing baby related

Re: Those with older non-custodial step children...

I have a step-daughter who is now 11 years old...the baby is 14 months old. My stepdaughter lives with us and has not seen her mother in a couple of years. She loves her baby sister so much.

There are times where I wish she would pay more attention to her own things (clean room, clean clothes, etc), but I think that goes for any pre-teen. I'm actually looking forward to the teenage years where she will actually care what her hair looks like and want to take a shower everyday Chat Icon Chat Icon

At this point...she still thinks it's so fun to have a baby sister...I'm not sure how she will be when she is 15 and the little sister is 5 and wants to tag along with everything...but we will see what happens!

Re: Those with older non-custodial step children...

I have a 10 year old step-daughter and she is extremely happy that she is having a little brother/sister. The only concern I have is that she feels that she is being replaced....so I am constantly telling her how much we love her and how lucky our baby is to have such a great big sister. I also tell her that no matter what she will always be her dad's #1
