I need your help with something....(a little long)
Okay so here's the deal, my BIL's brother's girlfriend's father is on life support (I know it's bizarre), and they are going to take him off the machines. She and I have met about 6-7 times, and I really like her. I feel like I know her better from conversations with my BIL...I'm going to see her in about a month for the holidays-the funeral is going to be upstate, so I won't be going. I'd like to give her something when I see her....something, I don't know, something that won't make her sad....anyone have any suggestions....

I would send her a heartfelt card now (whenever the funeral is) to let her now you are thinking about her. Then if you want to maybe buy her a picture frame or soemthing when you see her and tell her maybe she can put a picture of her and her dad in there.

I'm going to send a mass card for the funeral, and my family is sending flowers.
Maybe a picture frame, I just wanted something to make her feel stronger or something like that does anyone know if any of the saint medals for lost ones?

what was his name? If his name was Patrick, you can do a St. Patrick's medal ... etc ... for the name.

Send her something now. I think the last thing you should do is bring up her father's death and have her relive it for the holidays.

What about a book? Chicken SOup for the Greiving Soul. I know when I lost my dad it helped to hear uplifting stories about people who lost loved ones. Some made me sob- but everything ended on a happy or inspirational note.

I'm sending a mass card for the funeral, but I won't see her until about a month from now (not for the holidays exactly, but for a party in mid december)...and when I see her for the first time since this whole thing, I don't want to ignore it.

I am very sorry your friend is dealing with this.
You should wait to send the mass card after he passes away. As for when you see her, a sympathy card with a book of strength or poetry what ever you think she might like. Honestly, something like Tuesdays with Morries or Five People you meet in Heaven may give her a little comfort.

Since you are sending her a mass card and your family is sending flowers, I think this book is so appropriate. And since you won't be seeing her a month after, you'd want to give her sonething that will uplift her. I think this book is perfect.

Re: I need your help with something....(a little long)
When my grandmother died my DH mother got a tree planeted in Ireland in her name. It was very thoughtful.
My Grandmother's funeral was out of state so very few people went but i can't begin to tell you how much a simple card or mass card can make you feel better. It amazed me how many people sent me something or called when it happened. I was very touched by it all.
