Dog help please--- Lolita or anyone else who can help

This morning when I was leaving I noticed a very old beagle looking dog. I saying looking because this dog looks very wide and tall for a beagle but looks like a beagle. I figured it was a dog that had gotten loose and someone would come get it. It has a collar on. This afternoon the same dog was hanging around my house and my neighbor's house. Someone knocked on the door to ask if it was ours. My mother told them no (she was babysitting) and said I can see a collar can't you get the dog and see who it belongs to. The people left. Then just now I went out to my car to get something and the dog went running down my driveway. It's still around. It's getting cold out and this dog is obviously lost. I went back inside to get it a bowl of water and I was trying to find something in my fridge to give it because I don't have a dog only a cat. It ran away. I was calling it. I left the bowl out on my driveway for it. But I am getting nervous for this dog. It's getting cold it been out all day. It's not a dog from the neighborhood that I have seen before. I can't go chasing after it because my daughter is asleep and I am alone with her. If I do catch it I can't bring it in because of her and my cat. I don't want to call the town shelter I am afraid that if no one claims it they will put the poor dog to sleep. What should I do? Should I call the town? What can I leave out for the dog but at the same time I am afraid of racoons! If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it. It's obviously very afraid of people.

You can call the police and tell them that there is a lost dog wondering around your home and your afraid for the dog and for people driving. They will usually send a patrol car and try to pick the dog up or have animal control come and get it.

If you really want to go out of your way, leave some cheese outside and see if he will come to you. If he does, try to leash him with some rope or something so when the police come, they have an easier time catching him.

I would call animal control. They can catch the dog (hopefully) and if it has a tag, find the owner.
If you want to give it some food, anything will do. Some cat food, a little leftovers, if she/he is hungry it will eat. If you put the food close to the door I don't think you will really have to worry about raccoons.
Maybe you could ask your neighbor's to try and catch it.

I went out with cheese and water and he took off. I can't go to far from my house because of the baby. I just feel so bad for the poor thing. I am going out to check again and see if I can see him. If I call animal control won't they put him down if no one claims him?

Cat food I thought that was bad for dogs?? My neighbor to one side is 75 yrs old and the other side also has an infant and is in bed by now. I have large hedges infront of my door so I don't know if he will know to come up that way. I will go try again.

They will take him to a shelter and contact his owners if he has identification on him. If not, there's a mandatory 72 hour hold (NY) and then they try to adopt him.

As long as he has water, he'll be okay. He can curl up in the leaves if he gets cold.

Cat food won't hurt a dog in the short term. It's only if that is the only food they ever get.

Re: Dog help please--- Lolita or anyone else who can help

you can give him cat food. im sure he'd eat it.
if he has a collar on definatly try to get him.
you can just lock him up in one room if youre worried about teh cat and baby.
make a post on Craigslist.org and petfinder.
make flyers and call all shelters and vets near you asking if their owners have called about him. he is probably petrified and lost. if he has a collar on he definatly has a home and if you call animal control he will be put to sleep in 3 days if no owner claims him.
is there anyone else you know that could take him in until his owner is found?

Most people turn to Animal Control if they have lost a pet...I would call them. Something like this happened to me not long ago. They took the dog, and when I called that evening they told me the owner had already picked him up. Otherwise they give you a number to trace the dog if no one claims him, and you want to save the pup...

I went out 3 more times since I posted and I can't see him. My block is quite dark at night. I am hoping he/she belongs to the new people on the block and he is in for the night Chat Icon But if it is there dog Chat Icon that he has been out since 6:45am and they have done nothing. I will definitely call if I see him tomorrow morning. I will leave earlier to take a drive around the neighborhood. I left the water bowl out on one of my flower boxes by where he was hiding before. I am afraid with the food because of racoons. I was thinking about it. If I got him I have a screen room that I could have put him in for the night.

I will take the number for animal control with me when I drive around and if I see him I will definitely call. He seems to be really afraid of people. I was throwing cheese down the street the first time I went out and he just kept running away. I was whistling to him and calling for him but he kept going. I just hope Chat Icon that the poor thing is ok tonight and asleep in one of the big bushes on our road. My block is off of a main road, I am just grateful he was headed the opposite way.

Thank you to all that responded. If I see him again I will update you.Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon I know it can be very upsetting...but dogs have good instinct and he can probably take care of himself for the night, so try not to worry too much.

Hopefully he is home with his family now!!

Wow, Jamie, you must live on my block!! It's a monthly occurrance that someone dumps a pet over by us. And who are the poor suckers that ALWAYS takes them in?Chat Icon

I would def. call animal control if you see him/her around again. Even if the poor thing ends up being euthanized, it would be far better off than freezing to death or foraging for food. I feel so bad for the poor doggieChat Icon Why can't people be responsible for their pets??Chat Icon

Re: Dog help please--- Lolita or anyone else who can help

I drove around this morning for a half hour looking for it. I was almost late to work- bad I know.

My neighbor, the one with the infant also, had the same people knock on her door today. She told my mom she was able to feed it and that she did call the pound about it and that they were up once trying to get it but it ran off. She is leaving her back gate open and if the dog wanders back there she will catch it and keep it. My mother's theory is that someone just dumped the poor thing because it's obvious that this is an old dog.

I still haven't seen it this evening either, I don't know if the town got it or not, but it was a cute little guy. I wish we could have a dog- I miss having a dog.

Re: Dog help please--- Lolita or anyone else who can help- Another update

Well, I saw the dog this morning. I tried to give him some of the bread from my lunch that was in my car but he wouldn't stop. I got close enough to know that he is a male. My husband also called the town this morning. He said that if we catch him we are keeping him. The poor thing! 3 days out in the cold. He is so skiddish around people. I am going to stop on the way home from work and pick up dog food to leave in my driveway for him. He seems to like to stay between my house and my neighbors. I really think someone dumped him Chat Icon

Thank you so much. Chat Icon

I came home from work to change and get my daughter. He was laying across the street from my house (there is a field across the street) I called to him and showed him I was leaving food. I was gone 20 minutes and he ate all the food and half the water.

I just went out again and he was laying in the middle of the street. I bought more food out and tried to call to him and he took off again.

I just called the town again, they tried 2 times today to come and get him but he's fast they say. I don't think he moves that fast but I can't leave my house to chase him with my daughter. They are aware of it and they are going to try and set a trap up on someone's lawn to catch him Chat Icon I offered my yard since he seems to hang out by it but they said they have someone already but it will take a couple of days probably Chat Icon Chat Icon In the meantime this poor thing is outside in the cold wet weather and if I find the SOB that abandon him I will give him a HUGE piece of my mind. So sad. Since the town know about it I am going to assume that the owners have not called looking for him. They know what time of dog he is and his description.

I just hope someone catches the poor thing soon.

Sharon, Frankie said if we catch him we are naming him Justice- don't get it but OK. I want to name him chubbs but ok whatever. I don't think Xena will be happy to have another addition in the house though.

"And Justice For All" is a Metallica albumn...hence the Justice. It might be cool, considering the fact that he may have a wonderful home with you guys (if he'll give up the fight and just go to you alreadyChat Icon ) and justice will be served against the slimy a-holes that dumped him.
