Spinoff to Spinoff - Hanukah or Chanukah?
I'm a Christian and from the Midwest where there aren't a lot of Jews, so forgive me if this is a dumb question.....
What's the difference between Hanukah and Chanukah?

no difference at all - just spelling preference. i have heard that "chanukah" is the correct spelling but since it's a hebrew word, i don't think there really can be a "correct" english spelling.

It's a phonetic translation and either is acceptable. I go with the CH because it's pronounced with the throaty ch noise, but I usually pronounce it Hanukkah.

I would say the same and with further clarification:
The "CH" sound, for Hebrew and Yiddish speakers indicates a serious "loogie hocking" sound. Very few people do this correctly if they are not familar with it.

if you use just a plain H, it is the more european way of writing the gutteral transilteration (there would be a dot under the word to indicated the "ch" sound)

What part of the midwest are you from?
I am a Midwest Jew. There are a lot of us in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, etc...
The only difference is which relative taught you to spell it.

Thanks for your responses! It was very informative!
To Emily - I'm from a small town in Minnesota. I don't think there was a single Jewish person in my entire high school class of 180 people, if in my high school at all. I know there are a lot in Mpls/St. Paul area (where I went to college), but it is definitely a smaller percentage of the entire population than in New York.
