Too soon for clomid?

I'm normally on the TTC board, but after my gyno appt tonight i have a question for you ladies. I went off the pill in the beginning of Sept and it took 48 days to get AF. I am on CD26 of my next cycle. I just discussed all of this with my Dr. and she said that if I have a cycle that lasts longer than 35 days this time to call her to come in and she will talk to me about starting clomid. This is only our first real month of TTC. Does this seem too soon to be turning to drugs? I had irregular periods before going on the pill 10+ years ago and have possible PCOS. She would also want to do a semen analysis on my husband. I just would like some feedback from you ladies if possible. Thanks!

Re: Too soon for clomid?

I'm just starting in this process too, but your story sounds identical to mine. I have an appointment w/ the RE in about a month. At that point, she's going to do bloodwork, a sono, send DH for SA, and then take it from there.

I don't know if that helps you, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone! Chat Icon

Re: Too soon for clomid?

If you have PCOS then Clomid is probably your best bet at this point. However, with that said, I would ask your doctor to run the necessary tests first to confirm your PCOS.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I really never thought about having to go on medication to get pg so quickly. She seemed to think that I am not ovulating based on my history and irregularity in the past. I'm just hoping that this cycle isn't as long and that I am somehow ovulating on my own. I've been using an OPK this month, but we went on a cruise and I didn't start using it until CD20 which I figured might be ok since I thought I might be ovulating late (if at all). So far I haven't gotten a +. My Dr didn't mention anything about bloodwork or a sono before wanting to give me clomid. She said she would just want to talk to me about it before giving me the prescription. Keep me posted on your RE appt Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just finished my first cycle with Clomid and I didnt ovulate naturally this month...I had to get a shot. For me I figure if my body is not ovulating and there is somethign that can help me then why not! I'm 36 and dont have any time to waste! Brong on the Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So you still didn't ovulate even on the clomid? Are there any side effects associated with clomid? I just don't want to be taking it if it is too soon to tell if i need to. Although my Dr seemed pretty sure that I'm probably not ovulating on my own. Chat Icon

No. I did not ovulate on my own with clomid. I had to get the trigger shot. You only take clomid for five days. RE said biggest side effect was irritability. I was a little "emotional" but it was really not that different that PMS. Another side effect are hot flashes. I had one or two...kinda feels like your whole body is blushing for a minute or two Chat Icon

P.S. If you're not ovulating, you're not going to get PG. You can BD all you want, so if you're NOT ovulating it is certainly not too early to begin clomid IMO

Re: Too soon for clomid?

If you have PCOS then clomid can help you. If its just a coming off BCP thing, then I wouldn't take it so soon.

I had very irregular periods as a teen too. When I told my mom about the PCOS diagnosis, she said that she remembers them sayng that PCOS could be a possibiity back when I was a teenager, but then I went on BCP for nine years, so it was hidden.

I would see an RE though before going on clomid, you have to be monitored very closely, and most ob/gyns aren't equipped to do that.

Re: Too soon for clomid?

I completely understand that you can't get pg without ovulating.

I am confused as to why an RE would have more insight/knowlege of clomid than an ob/gyn. My gyno didn't make clomid sound like a big deal at all and didn't mention monitoring/sono's/bloodwork. I thought TTC and infertility were strictly ob/gyn issues. Why would my ob/gyn not be equipped to monitor it? Sorry for all the questions.

An RE is a reproductive endocrinologist. they specialize sctricly in getting you pregnant. You don't have to see an RE while on clomid, but at an RE you would be more closely monitored. How long have you been TTC? If you have been experiencing issues I wouldn't wait too long to seek help, and I would go straight to an RE. You could try the clomid with your OB, I've known plenty of people who ended up with BFP on clomid prescribed through their OB. An RE would run more test and Blood work and Sonos. OB's typically will prescirbe clomid first without any other real testing.

This is literally our first month TTC. I only went off the pill in Sept, but my first cycle off was 48 days. I had tons of bloodwork done with an endocrinologist when i was about 16 (i'm 29 now) because I had bad acne that wasn't clearing up from medication from my dermatologist. This was the original reason I was put on BCP. I honestly have no clue what the final diagnosis was from all the bloodwork since I was young and I guess I didn't care about fertility issues at the time. All I wanted was no more pimples and a regular period, which I got. I guess I'll see how this next cycle goes and if it is as long as the last one I'll call my ob/gyn and discuss. Thanks for all the info ladies!

Re: Too soon for clomid?

I didn't get to the point of a RE but I did have all the blood work done by my regular doc. I don't have PCOS but they don't know why my cycle isn't regular either. So after 7 months of trying and having crazy 45+ day cycles, I went on clomid and got pg on month 2
