Sober Calif. Drivers to Get the Bird

Nov 20, 8:39 PM (ET)

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) - Sober drivers passing through a DUI checkpoint in Salinas will be getting the bird. Up to 300 turkeys will be given to drivers who successfully pass through the sobriety checkpoint Tuesday. The location for the DUI checkpoint isn't being disclosed.

The Salinas Police Department and the Safe Teens Empowerment Project in Salinas are joining forces in the turkey giveaway.

That's pretty cool. Unfortunately, you know that a vegan (or some @!#$@^ lawyer "representing" vegans) is going to sue... Chat Icon (Nothing against vegans as a whole, but someone somewhere is always looking to sue....)

It's a shame people need an incentive to drive sober.

It's sad that people need incentives to not drive drunk. I don't think you should be "rewarded" for not breaking the law.

All kidding aside, there is a concept in behaviorism called "Catch them being good." - not the technical term, but it is a scientifically sound concept that if people are rewarded for engaging in appropriate behavior (rather than it being taken for granted or expected) - no matter what the behavior is, then the behavior will be reinforced and we will see a lot more of it...

Positive reinforcement. Works great for kids. Works for adults, too. Research has shown that positive reinforcement works more effectively than negative reinforcement. Rewarding for doing good goes further than punishment for doing bad.
