Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

Most of my family members are in unions, DH and I were never in a union.

I think that in theory they are great, but from what I've seen, a lot of times them seem to protect the cr@p workers and the good workers get hosed.

Or maybe my family members have all not been pushy enough to get what they deserve. Chat Icon

I have mixed feelings. There are pros and cons to them - and there are good and bad unions.

I'm not anti-union by any stretch, but I'm not gung-ho "all unions all the time" either...

Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

i am part of a union and i can honestly say that they are more interested in fighting for more pay/better benefits for it's current members than for the pay or benefits of future members. that is not to say all unions are like that but mine is. it's definitely not a good thing.

Some unions are necessary. My mother is in the Local 802 musicians union and without them she wouldn't have health insurance...

Overall, I think they're great. Unions provide workers with greater protection and benefits. However, I think unions/union members can abuse their power, either through unnecessary or illegal strikes or by filing grievances over every minor occurrence.

I feel the same way.

Unions are the reason why companies offer vacation, sick time & benefits. Think about it this way - you can work 30 years for the same company & they can terminate you with no severance. That means you can be 60 years with limited experience and try to find another job.

DH is union. He goes in, does a good job & doesn't have to kiss anyone's azz. He has job security & benefits. When a building collapses, the first thing they're talking about on the job is "was it union?" Why? Because there are strict safety regulations on union jobs.

On the other hand, the "it's not my job" has never been part of my mantra. I do understand his feeling that you should get paid for extra work but I feel like something is to be said about going above & beyond.

I'm in a Union - they protect our annual cost of living increases, provide dental and vision insurance that the State doesn't pay for/provide, and protect us when we deserve better pay, etc. They also help guarantee tenureship.

Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

I am the office manager for a union hall but not a member and my dad has been a union member for 30+ years and because of his membership, he was able to retire and receive excellent benefits when he had to go out on permanent disabilty. The benefits are great and I will be set with a great retirement when the time comes. I work in an office that is very "Pro Union" to where we can't even get supplies at Staples! Chat Icon
I am all for organizations that try their hardest to get the best for their brothers and sisters. I do know that not all unions are like this and it is a shame. When I was an EMT, I was a member of a union that would have thrown me under the bus in a heartbeat! With a job like that, you NEED to have a supportive union to back you.

Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

To me, they were definitely necessary in the past, and somewhat necessary in the present.... for example, I agree totally with the writers strike going on.. they're being denied their fair share of royalties from these new forms of media...
Also, without unions, health insurance coverage would take a major dive..... and no one can afford that.

However, they also can go a bit overboard in some areas......

unionization has caused a certain sub-set of jobs to have pay way above what individuals with similar skill levels/job requirements earn in other professions.... so these jobs simply are not at market level. since this cuases ALL members of a certain trade to be able to get 3X the market value of income, it makes the US noncompetitive in certain industries requiring these trades...

I was union as a grad student, and am no longer.... but if I ever become a faculty member, I would enter a union again.....

I am a Union daughter and a Union Wife.

I am pro-union.

There is a lot of political dogma and beaurocracy - but overall I think the idea of a union is a good one and that when run properly it can protect the interests and futures of it's members.

When I was young, My father lost his job due to a union strike

Now I am a teacher and am happy to be a part of a union

I believe some unions are more for the workers than others are

Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

i put other, as a teacher i appreciate my union getting me better pay and now the possibility of retiring at 55,
but my dh has issues with unions because he owns his own business, non-union, and they have problems getting jobs because all city contracts have to be union, and the majority of union workers they deal with work like crap compared to his workers and get paid astronomical amounts of money, but i can see the union workers side of it also

Re: Spinoff to Broadway Shows - How do you feel about unions?

DH is union, and my both my parents were (phone company & teacher). W/o it, they wouldn't have had the health benefits or pensions (which are hard to come by these days) that they do.

There are drawbacks...I'm not crazy about some things I hear about, but it's worth it in the end. And, in times of a strike (like now, and even the TWU strike a few years ago), although I hate the inconvenience, I support their right to walk out.

Short answer: Pro-union.

I completely think unions are necessary. I wouldn't have the working conditions that I currently have without them. They offer a lot of benefits to the employees.

Brilliantly said!!

I think unions had their place 120 YEARS ago when there were factories and unsafe working conditions for like, meatpackers.

But I think they are becoming less and less necessary and are eventually going to really hurt the US economy.
