UPDATE-UGH!

I took my car in today to get serviced. The check engine light was on and they estimated it about $550. Ok, fine. I dropped it off this morning and called a little while ago to see how it was going b/c I hadn't heard from them.
They said there are SEVERAL things wrong w/ my car and that it's going to be a LOT of work (which means a lot of $) and his assistant is drawing up an estimate right now but that we may want to look into getting a new car.
This is such bad timing for this!!! W/ everything that's already going on this week and now we have to worry about this. Chat Icon
I'm going to p/u the car in about an hour and a half b/c that's when I can get a ride there--- so i'll see how much damage to our piggy bank they're talking about.

Re: UGH!

Oh no! I would ask them to only do some of the work. Maybe what urgently needs to get fixed. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: UGH!

I'd be suspicious.... maybe get a second estimate on those additional repairs. I've been to numerous garages where they 'discover' $400 of extra problems.... which of course another garage never 'finds'. Chat Icon

Yeah, the car is 8 years old. My FIL gave it to us when we got engaged. I love my car!!! It's a lexus RX300 SUV and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm so upset right now. Chat Icon
My mechanic is very fair and I've used him since I got a license. My entire family uses him and we trust him. I did call my dad though and he's waiting to find out the figure so we can see what we should do.
Especially b/c DH and I are TTC, I really want to keep my car. I've gotten used to driving it and b/t my craft fairs/business and even just taking my neice and nephew out for an afternoon- it's so much easier than a regular car.

Re: UGH!

8 years old isn't really all that old for a Lexus.

Never hurts to get a second opinion.

Chat Icon I know that feeling, all too well. but I still choose to buy and keep my cars for a really long time. in the end, I think it's much more cost effective.

the one problem with having luxury cars is that everytime something needs to be fixed, or even an oil change, it can cost an arm and a leg.

good luck! I hope you can work it out so that it's not too much money

Re: UGH!

I have 4 pages of estimates sitting here ranging from new tires to the cattylitic (sp?) converter to the timing belt, etc...
they want almost $6,000 to fix my car!!!!!!!!! I'm so torn right now--- I feel like my car is worth it to fix b/c I love my car--- the blue book value ranges from $7,000-$9,000 which we'd be toward the higher end once all those things were done if we wanted to sell it down the line.
But $s been tight lately and we really don't have that kind of $ to just drop at the flip of a switch. I hope my dad has something positive to say about it. I had to get rid of my 1989 volvo last year and I was a wreck b/c I loved my car. Now I love this car (which we have only had for about 4 years but my FIL bought it new). Double UGH!! When it rains it pours. Chat Icon

Thanks Jess. I'm going to see what my dad has to say--- he's supposed to talk to his mechanic friend today so we'll see what's what. I'll mention your DH to him and see what he thinks--- what town does he work in? I'm out on the North Fork.
Thanks! Chat Icon
