Re: "Think Before you Pink"
Excellent post! SO much of what we donate to "charity" is wasted on useless crap. I know there is a website that can tell you if what you are donating it used mostly for research; I just can't remember it

Re: "Think Before you Pink"
The pink ribbon campaigns have always bothered me.
I would rather donate directly to an organization, where I know how much money is going towards what.
I don't need a $30 umbrella with pink ribbons (where only 5% of the proceeds actually goes to the cause) to do that or show that I have done that.

It's Charity Navigator.org, someone else posted it a few weeks ago and I bookmarked it.

I work for a company that produces products for "Shop for the cure". And I have seen the check go out to the Susan B. funds. So not all of it is a rip.

Re: "Think Before you Pink"
I'm glad you posted this. I feel like I see "pink" everywhere and on everything in terms of consumer products, they charge more money and make you think the overage is going to cancer research and the $ amount donated is so small in comparison.

Re: "Think Before you Pink"
this is a wonderful topic for discussion!!
hats off to you, deb, for bringing it to the foreground.
i hope that this makes us all think a little more about how we spend our hard-earned money.
yes... some money is better than no money towards any cause.
but... we should do our best to know which companies are donating how much.
and... if we don't like what we see, we need to let them know and then make donations directly to the cause we believe in.
again, i'm so happy we're all talking about this

Re: "Think Before you Pink"
i agree with you deb, there should be a general cancer awareness month. i was thinking this the other day. why is there no BRAIN TUMOR AWARENESS MONTH. we could be raising money to find a cure that hopefully would someday help my DH and yourself. i find it upsetting that alot of the money is used for increasing sale rather than finding a cure, considering my mother died from breast cancer at age 40

Re: "Think Before you Pink"
as someone who has brought MULITPLE pink products to Market- for the Breast Cancer Research fondation- under the Farberware and Cuisinart Brands
I can tell you that companies that partner with legitmate organizations donate money and lots of it
but there are other companies- that merely sell pink product- with no donation
we never had a "cap" but a minium
for example- regardless of how much product Cuisinart sells in Pink this year- they will at least donate $30K- even if $25K has to come out of there pockets (I don't work there anymore- so I have nothing to hide)
I think it's a nice way to donate money, get a product you need and have a reminder in your home about an issue that matters to you
BCRF predicts that in our lifetime- they will eradicate breast Cancer- and they do that thru cause marketing donations- it's not something to take lightly- you might think 10 cents doesn't make a difference- but times it by the whole country and it makes a HUGE difference
