Variance got approved!
Went to the Town Hall thing last night to get our variance approved. No problems. It's not a big variance. 22 foot from the back line instead of 25 feet. Whoever built the house originally put the house all the way in the back of the lot, so we have tons of front yard, but very little back yard...
That was interesting though. For most people, it was a very simple process. Someone looks at the survey before the meeting, does whatever research needs to be done, and as long as there are no major issues, it passes.
There was one family right before me.... wow... a neighbor came up and started complaining about things not related to the variance they wanted. Started getting real personal "Who's living in YOUR garage?"... "She has an illegal fence." "They have cans of gasoline in the back yard", etc... Very entertaining...
Now comes the fun part of interviewing contractors....

Re: Variance got approved!
Are you taking down your previous home and building a new home? I was trying to figure out why you needed the variance.

Adding an extension. Existing house is grandfathered in, but it's too close to the back fence. We're following the same lines, but going too close with current rules. Since we're following the lines of the existing house, they didn't even blink at the request.
