Church??????
So here's the deal...I was "raised" Catholic but rarely if eer went. I know VERY little about the bible and I have been wanting to go back to church. Joe(dh) is Lutheran(?) and my fil is a Lutheran minister. Joe dosen't have a great relationship with his father and refuses to even consider going to his church. Dad's family is Catholic and mom's is Methodist.....Question------Tell me a little about your church/religion(?) and what it's like. ie: Methodist is not as formal as Catholic in terms of "rules" They don't have saints and the rosary. I know i'm not spelling any of this right and I am soooooooooo sorry Any help would be great. I want to start going back to church, but I would like to have some idea about the religion before I just show up at say a Baptist or Lutheran church....TIA!!!

Re: Church??????
i have lots of information on the Catholic Church. . . it is really not all about "rules" as people think.... is there a particular reason why you don't want to go back to the Catholic faith?

Re: Church??????
my father is catholic, mom lutheran. i was raised lutheran. i have also been to methodist and catholic services. dh was raised catholic his entire life, went to catholic school - the whole 9. we went to his church when we started planning the wedding... let's just say, i left in tears. they were so condescending towards me because i wasn't catholic. i have NO appreciation for treatment like that, at all. i'm not the devil and i'm still a christian, still baptized, still confirmed. dh then came to my church and we were met by the pastor with open arms. i think dh was nervous about not getting married in a catholic church, what his family would think etc, but when he saw how i was treated, and when he saw how welcoming my church was, he wouldn't have had it any other way. lutheran is christian, just like catholic is. the only differences that really stand out to me is that the catholic religion seems a bit more strict, while lutheran is more laid back. and lutheran does not place emphasis on saints, at all.

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience, but your experience is the exception, NOT the rule. My DH was baptized Lutheran, raised evangelical, and is non-practicing anything. The vast majority of priests are extremely accepting of that - I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with your DH's church.
Also... (not directed to the post I quoted)... I think the majority of people who think that Catholicism is all about rules, saints, and the rosary don't have much direct experience with the Catholic church. That's really not what it's all about IME. (And I went to Catholic school from Kindergarten through 12th grade -- except for 2 years I went to a Lutheran school. I even went to an all girls HS...)
But then again, I can't claim to be a regular church goer these days either.

I have always felt myself going back to the little bit of Catholic knowledge I have, but after my wedding experience and talking about children I have changed my mind........
My parents were married in a well known prestigious(?) Catholic church where I live. My dad went to private school and my mom was methodist but converted for my father. While going through the marriage process they started getting very graphic and sexual phone calls from an unknown person. (this was over 25yrs ago so no caller id) My dad worked with the police and found out it was the father they had been working with. To say it skeeved them is an understatment. They finished the process iwth another father and were married at the church. They have never went back. I KNOW this is the exception and not the norm but it's a little scary. My other thought is this......If we decide to stick with the Catholic faith then my children will go to Catholic school. I know that what we hear is the exception but I can't even imagine leaving my son with a father. It would scare me to death. I'm quite confused though because I really do enjoy the Catholic faith. I enjoy the rosary, the saints, and everything else, but I wonder if that's because ZI do not know any better???? Thank you all for the advice and fm's PLEASE keep the knowledge coming!!!!!

I am sorry to hear of that very strange and odd experience. But it is NOT common. the sex abuse scandal in the Church was/is a terrible, terrible thing. however, that said, less than one percent of ALL priests, commit crimes like that. it is NOT the norm. i think people forget that ALL people sin. yes, our sense of trust and faith can be violated when we see "a man of God" sinning. but i tihnk people forget that the Catholic Church is run by HUMANS. Priests, bishops, cardinals, the pope are PEOPLE. they are not god. they make mistakes. i feel like the minute they make a mistake, the Catholics with little faith automatically throw in the towel and say "I quit. I don't believe anymore." to me that doesn't make sense. yes, people sin. yes, is it wrong for someone like a priest to commit a crime like that... of course. but rabbis have done it, protestant ministers have done it, teachers have done it. it certainly doesn't make it right---BUT it should not be the reason one loses their faith.
i think many American Catholics have not had enough real life experience with the clergy and the Church as how it is meant to be. I have gone on retreats, served as a full-time volunteer with the poor with a Catholic sponsored organization, went down to the third world... it is there you find Christ... and those experiences helped me SEE and FEEL my Catholic faith. it brought the Gospel to life for me. it taught me the true meaning of the Eucharist and community... i have seen the amazing work of priests and nuns that show me they truly our God's hands on earth and have inspired me to do the same to the best of my ability... i even thought about being a nun while i was in college... altohugh that idea didn't last too long!!!
overall, i feel most Americans (and I was like this for awhile) don't understand their faith (why Catholics do what we do) and they have not had the opportunity to see faith in action from those that do (i.e. missionaries, those in the third world, etc.) it is easy to critize when all you see and do is Sunday Mass... the same homily and the basket going around---again. while Mass of course is important, (the Eucharist is the crux behind our faith) there is so many other ways to experience the Church. Anyway, I could probably go on and on...and probably won't make the best sense... Definitely FM if you want to talk.

Re: Church??????
DH and I are both born & raised Catholic and plan to raise our Children Catholic. That being said, I kinda got a shock once we went through pre-cana. I used to think the same way about Roman Catholics with all their rules and restrictions, but pre-cana did teach me what's really important to God. I now realize that it isn't neccessary to agree with every aspect of the Catholic Church. Sometimes I do wish we went to church more, and I wish the Catholic Religon would make Mass a little less formal, but I still believe in the faith of the church. Not much help, but its really all I know. I have friends that are Christian but not Catholic and to be honest, most forms of Christianity have similar beliefs. If you can look past the rules, its extremely similar.

Re: Church??????
Well, I think you need to start with what you believe.
Are there particular Catholic beleifs that you don't agree with? Not just the culture or behavior, bt the actual tenants of the religion. That might point you in the right direction.
Also, many churches are fine with someone coming to services just to check it out.
