39wk appointment
Apparently I'm still only a finger tip dilated. However my baby is close to 8lbs. and my doctor thinks I'm going to have a hard time delivering her if I go to my due date the 18th. She doesnt want to me to have to have a c section so I may be induced next week. I would have been induced today but the babies head is not engaged. Has anyone ever gone through this before because the baby was big? I really dont want a c section.

Re: 39wk appointment
I was told this... I was GD they told me my DD would be big, my last sono at 39 said she was 8lbs 7 oz around that, and my doc didnt want to do c-section and couldnt be induced b/c of GD. Well my doc said to wait until we past 40 wks and then induce.. I went into labor the day after due date and DD came out vaginally and was 7 lbs 5 oz.. a little peanut.. she will be 3 weeks on sat. and still fits into newborn clothing. So dont worry what the sono tells you, they were wrong with everyone i spoke with.

Re: 39wk appointment
My doctor brought this up to me because my baby is on the larger side. Inducing doesn't mean it will end up being a C section. A couple of friends of mine were induced and delivered natural.
You also have to remember that they can be way off with the weight like a pound and a half off. If I were in your shoes I would wait another week. I don't think 8 pounds is huge either. I can't stand hearing that it is.

See what I mean. If my doctor brings up inducement when it's a matter of waiting another week or so I'm going to say no.

Re: 39wk appointment
whether or not an induction is likely to succeed is decided by your docs largely on the basis of your "bishop's score". if you google it you will have an idea what they are looking for. basically you get a certain number of points for level of dilation, effacement, and engagement. if your score is below/above a certain point, the induction is more likely to fail/succeed. the high percentage of inductions that end up as c-sections are largely due to people getting induced who have unfavorable bishop's scores.
but in my opinion, even if you have a good score, it doesn't mean you should induce unless you feel comfortable with your doctor's reason for wanting to do it. plenty of women give birth vaginally to large babies with no problem! plus, ultrasound weight estimates have a very large margin of error. if you're having doubts abot induction i would think long and hard about it, do your research, and have a detailed discussion with your doc about it.

Re: 39wk appointment
I had my 39 week appointment today too and no progress, I'm still only "almost 1cm" The doctor scheduled an induction for me for next Thurs 10/18.
