Ugggg..Dr office Rant

I'm switching to a RE starting next week and part of the preparation for that visit was to have my current drs office send a copy of my medical file to the RE (which by the way, is in the same building as my ob/gyn). They requested to have the information a week prior to my appointment and if my file could not get there within that week, they would unfortunately have to reschedule (it took 6 weeks to get this appointment to begin with). Anyway, they've been calling me since Friday to remind me they haven't received it, and in turn, I've been calling my ob/gyn's office and leaving messages because everything goes to voicemail. FINALLY today I get a return phone call and she's telling me that she's faxed them my file 4 times since last week, and I'm not the only one that keeps calling about a file not getting to the RE. After listening to her blame the RE's office... she finally says... "oh sh!t, I've been faxing your file and other files to the wrong number/place for the past 4 days!"

So now, I'm freaked that some random office, that may or may not be a doctor's office has all my personal information (SS#, insurance info, etc..)as well as test results, treatments, DH's SA results. I'm not sure how to handle this. The girl doesn't know where she faxed them to. I mean, she has the fax number, but no telephone number.

Wow, that's crazy!!! Hopefully it was just another doctor's office that they got sent to.

that's ridiculous. Doesn't that fall under the confidentiality law. don't we sign tons of papers saying who can see our file etc??? that's annoying, I wouldn't want anyone to have my personal information.

It depends on how strongly you feel, but you could definitely pursue it.

That is horrible! I can't believe that and would expect that someone from the OB/GYN would find out where your records went. In the least, the copies that went to the strange place should retrieved and properly destroyed. The OB/GYN should make sure of it! They could have a lawsuit on their hands! Plus, after all the calls requesting it, why didn't they just make a copy and walk it down the hall, since they are in the same office?!!? I hope it all works out for you.

ask the idiot for the fax number she has been faxing to and type it into the google toolbar.. the name may come up if it is a business that is listed.. it is worth a shot..

I can't believe that!! You should tell them they need to find out who they faxed your info too and have it all destroyed!

She called me back again yesterday apologizing like crazy and realized where she faxed them to. It was another's doctors office two buildings down from them, so I just called and asked if I could please come in (since it's right down the block from my office) for the all the copies of files she sent over. So I'll be heading over at lunch.

I told the girl in medical records she should also contact the other ladies whose files she did that to as well.

This is a HUGE violation of HIPAA laws. Keep a written record of this. IF anything happens to your credit report or identity over the next few years you need to have this information.

That is not acceptable! I would immediately speak to her supervisior and write a VERY strong letter to the head of the practice!
