Lost out on jury duty again...
Seems like they are calling 400 people at a time. I will miss it by 200 or so

Re: Lost out on jury duty again...
When I had jury duty over the summer they called my number. So I went down to the courts in Riverhead, sat there all day, and then the judge decided to dismiss us and sent us home.
I was a little upset I didn't even get questioned.

It's nice to see people who want to serve. All I ever hear is people complaining about being forced to serve.
I'd love to do it too. But in the 17 years I've been registered to vote, I've never been called.

For many people, it's a hardship. DW was summoned last year, but she has two DC at home. Luckily, she got out of it. Some people can't afford to miss days of work (the $ the court gives you barely covers gas... ). For others, it's a moral issue about passing judgement.
I wish there was a way to volunteer, so that those who want to serve can, and those who don't, only get called if they can't get enough volunteers. That would make most people a lot happier.

I've known people who volunteered, but still weren't called.... I wish the system was better implemented so that volunteers would get picked first, then go to summoned jurors after that.

Good point!
I was bummed that they didn't do more with me over the summer. Especially since I know I probably won't necessarily be in a position again where being out of work won't be an issue. And even more so with DH and I TTC and hoping I will work from home I'd then have to worry about childcare as well.
Oh well, this was the one opportunity I was excited about participating and they missed out.

I want to say I read somewhere that using volunteers would interfere with creating a "jury of your peers" since the people volunteering could end up being a jury of mostly retired or unemployed people which may not necessarily give you a fair panel.

Did you actually get to serve on a Jury?

Nope they never called my number. I have yet to be in a courtroom for it. I rule.

Good point. I understand the financial aspect of it, and the hardship involved with finding solutions to your other daily responsibilities.
I suppose the people who have full time jobs, get paid their full salary while on jury duty, and still complain and try to find every excuse to get out of it are the ones I get annoyed by.
But I don't understand what you mean about the moral issue, and passing judgement. Of all the times in your life to pass judgement, isn't that the one time it's ok?
I think it should be a requirement that companies pay full salary while someone is serving on jury duty, supplemented by the government. But I do understand that it a bigger challenge with small companies.
DH has only been a US citizen for 7 years and was called for jury duty a couple of weeks ago. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they decide who gets called.
Btw, thanks for the link. I'm checking that out.

I've gone without much complaint when I've been summoned, and never tried to get out of it, but even though I get paid my full salary while at jury duty, my work is piling up until I get back. I'm not enjoying myself, or getting work done. If I'm home and work piles up, that's one thing, but to have a ton of work waiting for me because of jury duty is annoying.
I would always be second guessing myself if I was on a serious trial (murder, car accident with severe injuries or death, or anything with jail time, or $ penalties so bad it would destroy a family). What if I missed something? What if we decided to put someone in jail that was really innocent? It happens. The movie "12 angry men" was about a jury that almost convicted someone until one person convinced everyone that he was innocent. Then again, what if you let a guilty person free?
Regarding jury duty pay:
http://www.uscourts.gov/jury/jurypay.html
Juror Pay
Federal jurors are paid $40 a day. While the majority of jury trials last less than a week, jurors can receive up to $50 a day after serving 30 days on a trial. (Employees of the federal government are paid their regular salary in lieu of this fee.) Jurors also are reimbursed for reasonable transportation expenses and parking fees. Jurors also receive a subsistence allowance covering their meals and lodging if they are required to stay overnight.
Your employer may continue your salary during all or part of your jury service, but is not required to do so. Nonetheless, the Jury Act forbids any employer from firing, intimidating, or coercing any permanent employee because of their federal jury service. You should check whether your company or employer has a policy for employees serving on jury duty.
Employers don't have to pay you a dime if they don't want to. How many people can afford to live on $40 a day for a month, or $50 a day if it goes longer? OK, you won't get fired, but you could also miss your mortgage or car payment....
It's not a terrible system, but it has some flaws.

I'm not debating that it's annoying, I'm sure it is. I suppose I look at it more as a duty of being a citizen of this country, and an honor really, than a negative thing. Then again, I've never been called so...

Precisely why you would be an excellent juror. Much better than someone who just didn't care and went along with the popular opinion.
Another great movie was Runaway Jury with John Cusak. It really made you think about people's motives and how people can be swayed.
What I'm saying about the pay thing is that it should be made a better situation for employers and employees. You can't just stop jury duty - the legal system would perish. That's not the answer. The answer is to make it easier for people to serve without hardship and for people to accept that it is a duty they assume by being proud citizens of this country.
Everyone isn't going to like it, but it is a responsibility that we should all be taking on. I'm volunteering because of all the times that I shook my head at frivolous lawsuits, I could actually do something - do my part - to maybe make a difference.

I think we see eye-to-eye here, just looking at it from different angles. I'm not sure how it's coming out, but I haven't disagreed with a thing you've posted so far...
I do realize I would make an ideal juror, and I do realize that I need to as a US citizen, and I realize that, while not perfect, it's probably the best and fairest justice system in the world.
