Re: Weighted Vest

The dog trainer and also the dog whisperer recommend getting the weighted vest for dogs with way too much energy, like my Chihuahua. so when you take him on walks they get tired a lot faster then they would with out it. It doesnt harm the dog in anyway, it just makes the dog less rambunctious when he is back in the house.

Not to say that the dog trainer is wrong but I am not sure how I would feel about having my dog wear that. I am a dog trainer also, I just got my certification and I have never heard of that. But again, there are many different techniques out there.

I try to burn my dogs energy by walking him everyday - but giving him all sorts of toys. Kongs, playing ball, playing frisbee, dog park.

Also try buying one of those balls that releases treats as the dog rolls/pushes it. That can take up a lot of time also and burn some energy

I think Cesar's idea is that not only does it wear them out but it makes them feel like they have a job.

Yup, I saw that one too. It's supposed to be better with working dog breeds - Labs, Border Collies and such - because they have a purpose.

I see it as another tool to keep their mind occupied with a task and get better exercise at the same time.

But obviously, not something you would want to do with a breed prone to spinal issues (like Dachsunds, I think?)

I've never seen those vests advertised though, sorry. Chat Icon

I was just thinking I would never do that with my dachshund. I am kinda wondering if a chihuahua's legs could take it. How much weight are we talking about?

Considering he is 9 lbs., not much. They do sell them at Petco but we didn't buy them.
