Thanks to Google, NYT archives going free
NYT to stop charging for parts of it's website
Apparently, they've gotten many more one-time visitors from search engines than they anticipated. Not the kind of people who are likely to subscribe to read one article.

that's great-- I hated having to buy an article from time to time... they can make more money from advertisers.
