taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
have you ever found yourself enjoying it when someone comes across misfortune/bad luck?
there is a group of people in my life who consistantly make like "not-so-wonderful". there is one particular person, she is the type who is always making sure everyone knows how she and her family is better than anyone else.
something not-so-wonderful just happened in her life... her daughter's engagement ended abruptly and the girls is having to move back home.
i know a broken heart and i don't wish it on anyone, but there is a part of me that is smiling.
shame on me

Re: taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
I wouldnt necessarily wish a painful situation on someone whether physical or emotional. But I do believe that people "get theirs in the end" and I did smile when someone who was very cruel to me as a child "got theirs". She wasn't hurt and I am sure she is fine now MANY years later, but that moment of satisfaction I had gave me some sense of peace.

I think it's natural to feel that way sometimes, whether it's nice or not.

Re: taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
I'm sure I've been guilty of this. I had an aquaintence once whom no mater what she did she always made out of it "ok". For example, got pregnant was jobless barely able to pay the bills and somehow managed to find someone with $$ to take care of her and baby. So when something (that was completely out of my control and happened without any help from me) misforunate (and might I add certainly not life threatening) I got a little warm inside. It was nice to know that not everything will be perfect for her and she is human just like everyone else.

I would never wish harm or pain on anyone but I will giggle in a heartbeat over something small (like a flat tire when the person is in a rush)

I would never wish anything bad to happen to someone. If they deserve it, I may *snicker* .

Re: taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
I know how you feel. Out of the countless amount of people I've met in my life, there are 3 specific ones that I secretly hope, deep down inside, not-so-nice things will happen to. Nothing horrible, but... I sure wouldn't mind if they had a few bad days. You could call it karma - there's definitely a reason it's those 3 and no one else. I feel really guilty when I think about it though I swear I'm usually a very nice person!!!

I think in one way or another everyone has found themselves in that situation.. its human nature. Its not that your a bad person, its just the way our minds and emotions work together at times. If you purposely do something to someone that causes it then that wrong, but we all know karma gets us all in the end..

Re: taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
I don't always, usually I am very sympathetic.
But when it involves something that I myself am careful to avoid, and someone else falls into a problem with it, part of me does feel a little smug.
Just last Friday, I had a speeder/tailgater on my @ss on Ocean Parkway so I pulled to the side to allow her to pass. And saw her pulled over by a cop miles down the road. I laughed when I saw it and I did take pleasure in her getting caught.
But when I saw someone I knew rush into a wedding with her eyes closed to the relationship problems she had for years, it made me thankful for having a solid relationship with my husband.
I don't think that's the same thing, although I do count myself lucky that we don't have the problems many others do. I don't like garnering pride out of other people's problems, so I try to avoid situations where I feel myself comparing my relationship to others.

Re: taking pleasure in another's misfortune?
i wouldn't say i'm taking plesure, but definately benefiting.
the seller of my house bought it a year before i did for him and his fiance. he gutted the entire house. then he found out that his fiance was cheating on him, he called off the wedding and undersold the house so he could get out quick. i never could've afforded this house if he had listed it for what it was worth.
i feel badly that he was dealt a bad hand, but DH and I are benefitting from it.

I wouldn't say that I do that, but the German have a word for that. Schaudenfraude. I love that word. (okay might be spelled wrong, can't be arsed checking it...)
