Helmet Kids Part 3 - THE PARENTAL CONFRONTATION!

I came home today and saw the little girl on her Big Wheel again. This time she was on the sidewalk. I also saw her Mom. So I walked down and asked her if she was in fact the mother and I introduced myself. I apologized for yelling at her child and told her that I am terrified that someone would hit her coming down the street.

I also explained to her that I am legally obligated to say something because I am a state mandated reporter even OUTSIDE of my own classroom. I went even further and told her that state law requires children under 14 to wear a helmet and I wouldn't want her to be cited with a fine or anything else.

Well the mother was very nice and appreciative. Turns out the little girl is not 4 (as I thought) but 6 and her brother is 13. It seems as if this lil girl is a bit of a diva and likes to test her mom as she was in and out of the street on her Big Wheel. The mother obviously did not want to lose it in front of me. I told her that sometimes kids are fearless and they won't understand the consequences until and unless something happens. She agreed.

Now I can sleep at night knowing I did the right thing. She did not force the helmet issue on her kid which bothered me, but I was not up for a fight. I am by nature non-confrontational.

It is. This mother looked so overwhelmed. I felt bad for her. The little girl remembered who I was and told me that I should go home. I told her I would if she listened to her mom. One step at a time.

Good for you Leslie!

Who knows? Maybe you yelling at her is what that little girl needed. As we all know, sometimes hearing something from a parent means nothing but when you're called out on something from a stranger it means more.

When we were younger, the neighbor's kid used to bite everyone including my sister. Well one time he bit her so hard he made her bleed. Well my mom lost it and she bit the kid on the back of his hand. Clearly this could NEVER happen now, but that's a whole other story! Chat Icon Anyway, the kid ran home crying.

Awhile later the mother came to our house to, what my mom thought, confront her; but NO! She, instead THANKED my mom!!! Apparently no matter what she did she couldn't stop her son from biting people and finally when it happened to him, he realized it hurt and stopped immeadiately.

So maybe like the biter on our street, this little girl needed someone else to yell at her to make her understand that she cannot ride her big wheels in the street.

At any rate, well done!

Fortunately, I deal with behaviors much worse than this on a daily basis in day treatment. I can take it.

Chat Icon You really couldn't have said it any better.

And like Jen said, maybe this kid needed to be called out by someone other then her mother. Kids take what their parents say for granted most of the time, and hearing from a stranger usually catches them off guard which in turn forces them to behave.

But in any case, at least you did what you felt was right and in turn feel better about the situation.

Well done! Chat Icon

Well done. And bravo for speaking to her in a way that it will most likely sink in.

But wow what a brat she has on her hands huh? I think you have many years of Halloween egging headed your way. Chat Icon

My daughter is 23 yrs old and does not know how to ride a bike. WHY? Because she refused to wear a helmet, so I refused to get her a bike.
She laughs about it now.But at the time I was the worst mother in the world!

Good for you for saying something. Hopefully it didn't fall on deaf ears.
