Setting up Household
I'm trying to make a list of everything I need to set up a household for the first time, and I can't seem to find anything comprehensive enough.
Does anyone have a really good list?
What I need really is like a room by room checklist of things you should have when you get your very first home when leaving your parents. Stuff as basic as salt & pepper for the kitchen all the way to a vacuum for the entire house.
Can anyone help???

I think Bed Bath and Beyond has a list that they give you when you register there.

Yeah, that should work. Macy's also had one.

Here's a link to their list: First apartment list of things you need

Re: Setting up Household
I think you should just make one for yourself. Go through your parents house, room by room, and write down everything you see that you think you'll need. Then ask if they can donate some items they have duplicates of... Also, you can capitalize on the start of the semester and get dorm room supply lists from different shops.
Since I suspect you're on a budget, prioritize. What's important to you? IKEA was my saving grace when I moved out on my own. I bought inexpensive dishes, kitchen utensils, glasses, and pots/ bowls there to start.... also funriture, linens, blinds, and storage containers. It was a great help to not have to pay BB&B retail prices (usually more than double IKEA prices) for everything. Just go to more expensive shops for the investment items... vacuum, iron, kitchen appliances (toaster oven, blender, coffee maker).... Don't forget your cleaning tools... mop, bucket, sponges... or the electronics (TV, radio...)
most of all, don't worry too much about lists, you'll definitely realize stuff you forgot as you live in your new place... and can always write a list of small stuff (such as the S&P shakers) to pick up over time. You can definitely survive without some of that stuff in the beginning, and it might hit your budget a bit less if you didn't buy every single tiny thing all at once

Re: Setting up Household
I just have one advise.
Don't buy too many "gadget" appliances. They take a lot of space in your cabinets and you will only use them once or twice. I can't remember how many of them I got rid of over the years.
Reason for not being used: Mostly, too annoying to clean, too bulky so not easily accessible in the cabinets, etc...

I second that! Only buy things you currently use REGULARLY. If you don't use it ever week or so, skip it. no need to clutter up your new place!

I couldn't agree more - and if needed, you can always call a neighbor for something you want to use/borrow!
