Band Camp

I live near a high school and its band camp week!!!

Please.....someone come over and poke out my eardrums!!!Chat Icon

They start at 9am and dont finish until 9pm.

I love that they are on the football field until 8:59 pm......playing at full blast....we can't even keep the windows open b/c it wakes up the baby.

Now, I was in this same band when I was in high school and it was 2 weeks from 9am-4pm I think. I would have never been in it if I was expected to be there for 12 hours....plus i was a sucky flute player anywayChat Icon

My HS used to send us to Southampton College for 5 days of non stop practice in the dam heat. It was always this week of August and we would do our "Demonstration Show" on day 5.

Prior to this, we practiced at the HS from 4-8PM 3 days a week.
I was in band for 3 years and my senior year I was on flagline/colorguard.Chat Icon

Re: Band Camp

Just to let you know Band Camp and marching band involves a ton of practice. In order to have a good half-time show, the kids need to practice for many hours.

Go check them out at a football game and see how well they do. I am sure you will be impressed!!

As much as it sucks, at least they're not doing drugs or driving their cars on your lawn. I have to support them. I'm a music teacherChat Icon

I understand how involved it is...as written in my post, I was in the same marching band for a year.

What I don't feel necessary is that they are still playing instruments until 9pm...for instance, they could play earlier and practice formation or something when it is later at night.

They are a good band and I see them frequently during football season

I understand what you are saying.

Playing is usually the easy part but playing and trying to do the formations is the challenging part. Therefore, I think the band director probably feels the students should do both at the same time.

What school is it? You can FM me if you want.

Very, Very true! Not only did we have camp all summer, but, everyday in the fall, 9th period we were out on the field practicing for HOFSTRA which was the biggest festival and biggest deal of the season. It really was a lot of fun, but, A LOT of work!Chat Icon

Re: Band Camp

shut your windows and put on the AC!

I was a band geek and as much as I hated marching band, i love music (and it was an easy A...and on band trips we got wasted). its not like they are having a kegger from 8-8.

HOFSTRA was freakin' awesome.
We held a "Pre-Hofstra" party the night before. Had a Pasta Party at the school then went on scavenger hunts, then performed in front of our teachers and coaches houses.Chat Icon

I think past a certain time they should move it indoors. That isn't too nice to the neighbors.
