Drugs make me nervous, but I am not opposed to them if the pain is more than I can handle.

The epi numbs you from your waist to your toes. It is a spinal - they're not two different things.
I personally will take the epidural as SOON as they will give it to me.
ETA: the epidural does not have to ware off before you push - they'll tell you when the contractions are coming and when to push.
Not true in my experience. I felt my legs, one was a little numb. Also my epidural was able to be controlled and "backed off" when I had to push so that I could feel the contractions
I will be asking for another epi if the option is there!!!

I had the epidural but it did not stop my feeling of pressure when it came to pushing... I pushed when I felt the need to push...

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
I didn't want the epidural, but I wound up having to have one anyway. It numbed me completely from the waist down...so much so that I had to be told when to push! It was a really freaky feeling to push without being able to feel I was doing anything! The one thing I was most afraid of with the epi was the whole needle-in-the-spine ordeal....and that was not bad at all! I didn't even know it was in.

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
just a caution to all of you ladies who want the epidural... i got one with DD and her heart rate went to half of what it should of been and within 20 minutes of getting the epidural it was turned off and i had natural child birth all the way. the worst part of which was that no one told me the epidural was off until i told them it still hurt.
this time around i want the epidural again and am hoping there are no complications.

I am not a needle fan in any way shape or form!
However...the epi is the one needle that I will gladly except. Bring it on!

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
I don't know anything since this is my first time and everyone is different. I plan on going natural as long as I can, depending on the way things progress during the labor. If I am getting Pitossin(sp?) or I need them to break my water, then I think the contractions get so bad I would really want some pain relief. So....we'll see.

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
Just an FYI, like in my case, I couldnt get one since things came & happened WAY too quickly!!
Yup, no chance for an epi...therefore NATURAL and felt it all...but I felt great afterwards.
Now my next one, I plan on it!

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
I had the epidural & it was a lifesaver...I was in a LOT of pain w/ contractions & had one at 4cm dilated & I wanted to kiss the dr. at that point...what a relief! At that point I did feel my legs, although they told me they didn't want me on my legs & put in a catheder at that point.
However, hours later when I didn't progress past 7 they up'd the epidural & gave me demeroff & at that point I felt nothing from my chest down

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
Funny someone mentioned that they are tired of the comments they hear because they don't want an epi, I hear them because I do want an epi. I am totally petrified of L & D and I want the epi as soon as they will offer it. Say what you want, but it is noone's business besides mine & DH's.

That was me!!! I never really stopped to think that girls who wanted the epi got the same type of comments!!! ITA... nobody's business and everyone should respect each other's decisions!

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
I'm going to make the decision at that moment before they say this is your last chance to get an epi.
My cousin was trying to explain contraction strengths to me she said she got her epi when she was around 50? and after she saw the monitor and her contraction strengt was in the 100's.
I never thought they have the ability to measure you contraction strength. So weird. I hope she didn't say that to m just to get me scared.

Re: do you want the epidural or go natural?
I went in wanting the epidural...I didn't think anything of not having control of my legs though. It really felt like my mouth would after getting novacaine. They turned it off when it came time to push...but it sure did make a difference in those last few hours of labor. I can't imagine going through the pain that would have come had I not gotten it.
