Okay, this evening, DH went to our house (we're not living there yet, still doing work on it) and found a notice from LIPA on the door saying they responded to our service call. What service call, I would like to know since we never called them!

Anyway, the power line was moved and is now attached to the house with a rope. There is a nice big hole in our siding, and the meter is dangling from the side of the house. There was a notice with this saying our attachments were defective, the problem has been corrected please call an electrician?

What the F***? We have no electrician, nor much time or money to hire one now. I have no idea what this would cost, but I'm guessing it's not cheap. What I don't get is why they were there in the first place, we had no problems with our power. Sorry, I need to vent.

Has anyone heard of anything like this happening?

Re: LIPA

I would LIPA customer service and find out what's going on and make sure it was actually a LIPA service man who did this.

Re: LIPA

I did call their 24 hour line last night--wasn't so 24 hour, I got a message saying I should call back at 8 am.

Today after a few phone calls, I found out that a line was down and someone called it in--this must have happened sometime on Monday since we were there Sunday and everything was fine. When they came to repair the line, they noticed our point of attachment wasn't installed correctly, so they repaired what they will repair, but apparently we need to find an electrician by the end of the week, or LIPA will shut off our power.

Great--we can do this, along with packing, moving on Monday, working and doing our hour plus commutes every day. I don't know if I should laugh at her or cry. Sorry for the sarcasm, but I've just had it.

We've had one problem after another with this house, and we've only owned it one month. I'm starting to wish we went for a bigger co-op instead. Someone please tell me this is all worth it!

Re: LIPA

It is all worth it, but every house needs a little TLC.

Reason we all get the saying - "Welcome to Home Ownership!"Chat Icon

We saved $$ for a shed for our backyard and ended up having to use the $$ to pay for two exterminators to come to the house to deal with wasps and yellow jackets.

It will all come together in time and you will enjoy the home that you made for yourselves!Chat Icon

Thanks! I'm just getting discouraged, and we're so tightly stretched right now, we really don't have the time or resources to find an electrician. It's a busy week at work for both of us, and we can't take much time off for this, though I suppose we'll have to do it. I knew this would happen with a house, but I guess I figured we'd have a little time to move in and get our bearings.

But thanks for the reassurance.

Re: LIPA

OMG, I can't believe this happened to you. Try not to stress to much. Things will all work out in the end and everything will be fine when you move in. I hope you find an electrician soon. Chat Icon

Re: LIPA

Thanks for your well wishes and recommendations! I freaked out when I heard about this--I don't think all the transportation woes this morning helped either, or the fact that we want to move very soon!

We had two electricians come out today, and one told us it shouldn't be a lengthy or expensive job, another told us we needed to increase our capacity, though I thought ours was fine. Our inspector seemed to think so too, so I'm guessing he was looking for more $$$ out of the job. We have another electrician coming out tomorrow. I didn't see your recommendation Dancin' Barefoot, till late today, but we may call tomorrow, especially if we get some differing opinion.

I guess I am now immersed in the joys of home ownershipChat Icon ! Thanks again!
