Pigeon eggs??

Houston, we have a problem. Last night I discovered a ring of twigs on the corner of our balcony floor with 2 white eggs in it. Based on the birds that are flying in and off our balcony, they are pigeon eggs (?). In any event, I went out there just now and the nest was gone. I thought they relocated. However, when I sat down I saw that on the edge of the balcony, literally about to fall off the 2 story balcony are the 2 eggs. The birds are all in the tree right here so I can't move them. But I feel bad. What should I do? Will the birds let them fall or save them??? They're not even on twigs or leaves anymore.

Re: Pigeon eggs??

what ever you do, do not touch them with your bare hands... not only for health reasons, but also becuase the pigeons will reject them...

maybe put some gloves on, and either pick up the nest, if you can find it, or gather some leaves to make a pile and gently nudge them from the edge?

looks like your going to have to share your balcony for a while......

You know where the banister meets the ground and there's 2 inches between the banister and the ledge? THAT is where she has the eggs. I can't get to them from behind obviously to nudge them in, so I'm really not sure how to tackle this without touching them.... I know I can't use my bare hands, but I don't know.... do you think they're just moving them temporarily and will recloate them again? do you think they know it's not safe? hmm

This is an old wive's tale...birds do not have olfactory organs - they do not smell.

I would try to move the nest to a safe place and hope for the best. I wonder if they're Mourning Doves - they aren't too bright when it comes to nest building, unfortunately. Chat Icon

Re: Pigeon eggs??

A friend of mine has the same thing - one of the eggs rolled out of the nest, so she picked it up with a papertowel and put it back in. She said the momma bird came right back to the nest and sat on it.

You can touch the eggs. Try to move it to someplace safe that is close to the original nesting sight. The mama bird will search for her eggs if she returns and they are not where she remembers them. Don't move them too far though, cause as Colleen said, they aren't the brightest bird species of the bunch!
