Professional or Unprofessional

I have a tattoo on my back shoulder blade, and I have never worn anything that would show my tattoo to work. I have a great dress that I'd love to wear to work but it would show my tattoo...do you think it's unprofessional to wear it???

I work for an insurance co. Not a big corporate office. But cleints are in & out of the office.

Opinions please. TIA Chat Icon

DH works for a hedge fund, and while they are allowed to dress pretty casual even with clients in the office, the owner would not be happy if someone had a tatoo showing. He's also spoken to someone about piercings in visible places other than ears.

I think it would be fine, maybe just keep a sweater or a jacket with you in case a client pops in.

Re: Professional or Unprofessional

I don't think showing a tat is unprofessional...I do, however, think bare shoulders in the office is unprofessional.

Re: Professional or Unprofessional

I love tattoos and admire the works of art that they are. However, if you are in a working atmosphere where clients are coming in and out of your area, they need to be covered. Not everyone appreciates them and, for some, they have a negative connotation.

Sleeveless (so shoulders) I think can still be professional but not so sure about a dress that would show back/shoulder blade.

I agree. I don't think the tattoo would be a problem (unless it is of a naked woman or a giant penis) - but the dress that exposes your shoulder blades may be slightly risque for a professional atmosphere.

I agree, I have a tattoo on my ankle that I show when I wear dresses or skirts and I work in a professional environment (financial services firm), and I have never had a problem

I work for an insurance company and we are very casual. I think it depends on the office. People in my office wear capris and sleeveless shirts.

I agree.

Even as prevalent as tatoos are now, it can still make a negative first impression on a client.

I would keep it covered.

Re: Professional or Unprofessional

Does your office have a dress code? I know that the type of dress you describe is not acceptable at my office (I also work at an insurance company). As for tattoos, I've seen then displayed at work (ankles, arms, etc) and no one has said anything.

Re: Professional or Unprofessional

I'm a CPA working with clients, and have never seen a tattoo ever at work, it's a shock when I see someone with facial hair. I'd wear something else.

unless its a giant penis or soemthing, go for it.

we are i nthe middle of 2007....
tattoos are inescapable these days.

worse comes to worse your boss asks you to not show it off again.

you need to test the waters!
