I would say, get off at Union Square, then walk south along 7th Avenue, until you hit Greenwich Ave, then make a left.

I'd take the 1 to 14th street, exit at West 12th and 7th avenue, and walk south on 7th to Greenwich Ave. Should be about a 2 minute walk.
