It depends - I'm from upstate and I've seen both - gifts from registry and monetary gifts.
He should give what he feels comfortable giving - whether it's a gift or $$.

i think either would be okay. being a LI'er i would give money myself...but my aunt and uncle who come from upstate came to my wedding and brought me tiffany's candlesticks which i loved, but they were the only ones that showed up with a present and not a envelope.

I got married upstate and hd guests from LI and up there.
I received both gifts and $$$$.
I would only give $$$, but that's me.
