Spinoff of Spinoff of What's for Dinner
I was wondering what everyone considered "from scratch". I am figuring things like Hamburger Helper, Manwich, Kraft Mac & Cheese are not from scratch. I usually marinate some type of meat, make a rice or noodle dish and veggies. I guess I do not make from scratch because I don't make the starch sides homemade.

when I say we're having homemade pasta salad, I don't mean that I actually made the pasta too

I consider it from scratch if it doesn't come out of a packaging of some sort. Rice a Roni - Not from scratch, but if I use plain white rice and add my own stuff to it such as buillion, carrots, onion, garlic, peas then I consider it from scratch. Homemade mashed potatoes - from scratch. Any meats I usually make my own marinades and dry rubs, nothing from the bottle=from scratch.

Yup, that's how I would define it as well

If it's not prepared already, it's from scratch.
I consider most of my starch sides homemade because I season them myself.
For example: Cous Cous I cook using chicken broth & seasonings (not prepackaged or preseasoned)....therefore from scratch to me!
If I make creamed spinach & I have to season, heat & thicken the milk........it;s from scratch.
If I make mac & cheese in the box, NOT from scratch.
All are simple & take the same amount of time......but I like the taste of from scratch much better!

That's what I figured. I don't bother buying bottled marinade anymore as I like mine better. It's hard to make everything from scratch at my house because we have 2 kids who are very cranky by the time we get home and they just want to eat now-lol!!
