Do you ever...

Just have a terrible, burning desire to strangle a family member? Chat Icon

I have a brother who lives in Philly. I help him out all the time. I send hubby over to install ceiling fans and repair his new house. I lent him half of our tools. I buy him dinner or lunch whenever we're out (mind you, he's older), and feed him anytime he comes over to the house. I ask virtually nothing of him in sharing the responsibility of my father - he lives with us, I drive him to and from dialysis, I feed him, I do his laundry, make his appointments, etc. Let's not even talk about the financial burden I'm shouldering by myself with having the a/c on 24 hours a day for an elderly parent, and buying all his groceries.

So, you would think, when my brother comes across 2 tickets to one of my favorite singers, and found even BETTER 2nd row tickets, that he would "give" me the crappier tickets, right?

Yeah, wrong. He told me I have to give him $150 for the tickets or he'll sell them on Craigslist.

Thanks Bro.

Love you too.

I would be LIVID. I would never pay for him or let my hubby help him until he realized how wrong that was.

Re: Do you ever...

Just wanted to add, this is the same brother who hasn't been talking to me or DH, because after spending two full days helping him out with his new place, when we asked if he could help out getting things out for our BBQ, he turned around and said, "not really" to DH and walked away.

I emailed him and told him that I was very hurt at how he responded to DH after all the help he's done, not just for my brother, but in taking care of my father. My brother didn't take kindly to my criticism, and has been avoiding us ever since.

But, I guess he isn't SO mad because he feels comfortable enough trying to unload a pair of $150 tickets on me Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry. Chat Icon Family members who take advantage are the worst. I feel your pain. But it's been my experience that sometimes they just don't see it because they're so used to getting everything for free.

Have you ever talked to him, or forced him to pick up the slack? Doesn't hurt to ask. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's exactly the problem. He's the middle child, and our oldest brother hated him so vehemently that my parents always catered to this brother, to compensate. He grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth with such an entitlement perspective.

I've talked to him about it. The problem is that combined with this entitlement perspective is an individual who cannot and will not accept that he has ANY flaws, and does not accept any kind of constructive criticism whatsoever. Every time I broach the topic, he stops speaking to me for months.

He once acknowledged that I'm doing quite a bit for our father and said he'll help out in any way, that all I have to do is ask. Yeah, well, the first time I asked, his response was, "wellllll, I'm really busy, and I realllly wanted to go to the gym today". So, rather than deal with his BS, and the guilt trip he lays into me everytime I ask for a favor, I just do it myself.

Re: Do you ever...

Brothers just don't get it!

I was in the same shoes as you are.
I took care of my Father after my Mother passed away....and Not once did my brothers nor my sister ever say that they appreciate what I did!

Well, my Father did....and In the end that's all that matters

your Brother maybe a jerk.....but you being a good daughter to your Father.
you will be repaid in the end!
