for godparents?? would you consider a friend you've known for 2 years or would you do family?

Everyone is different. There's more to look at than time you've known somebody. I won't choose my family because my brothers won't raise my child anywhere close to what I would like and my sister had her last child 17 years ago, so I won't want to burden her with another child, should something happen to us. So, it's hard to say whether to go for a friend or family. Everybody is different.

Personally, I wouldn't pick someone I've only known for 2 years. Friends tend to come and go, while family is forever. JMO, though.

we picked people who we are very important to us and who we thought would be great role models for our kids and would be 2 EXTRA special people in their lives, we indeed have been blessed with some wonderful godparents for our 3 children.

Stick with family. My mother chose a friend of hers to be my godmother and they lost contact and I basicallly do not have a godmother.

I would do family...I picked someone who I knew for 15 years as one of the twins godparents. She met this guy and she stopped speaking to her friends and she got really weird...My daughter just received her communion minus her godmother

just be aware that family can backfire also! My mom picked her brother and his wife to be my godparents. Needless to say, they divorced and I've been without a godmother since age 8!
I wouldn't pick someone you've only known 2 years, IMO. That's not really enough time to determine if the friendship is going to last.

We are picking family only. My parents were both picked as godparents for friends of theirs when they were young and they lost touch with those friends shortly after. For our first baby it will be my brother and SIL.

Tough question. My godfather was a friend of the family. I haven't seen him since I was 10. My sister has not seen her godmother (also friend of the family) since birth. However family members that are our godparents we obviously see.
My sister & BIL chose me & one of his oldest friends (25 years) as godparents. My niece is two and both godparents were present for her b-day.

Sister and brother are the godparents. If we ever become pg again someday - we plan to ask our friends (DH has known for over 25 years and I have known mine for over 20 years).
I doubt very much I would ask someone I only know for 2 years but I would consider it.
My godparents are my father's childhood friend and his wife. Once their marriage fell apart - I haven't heard from them even after running into my godfather in a restaurant years ago and trying to KIT with him. So even friends who have been in your life a long time can be flaky as godparents. But I will never have a husband/wife be godparents for this reason. I wish I had one of my godparents in my life

ahhhhhhhhhhh can you have 2 of one gender....
I am not sure who I want to ask as Godmother.. everyone is a flake.. My friends ahh.. they date guys and disappear and even being PG now some of them F*** Suck.. so why would I want someone like that to hold such an honor!
