Re: spinoff: do you think alarm systems are neccessary
Personally I never thought they were, but I do now. We use ours mainly for the fire/smoke help. I feel more secure when DH is out of town.
I never feel comfortable with leaving my windows unlocked or the doors. I have 35 windows and 7 doors in my house I check every night. It's an obssesion but I don't feel comfortable until I know everything is on lockdown It's sad to live like this, but unfortunetly you have to. we live in a really nice, friendly community that nothing ever happens until one day a couple months ago I came home from dropping my daughter off at school and found a strange man in my yard. Long story short, I yelled at him until he left my property and I ran in the house, locked everything up and called the police, then called my neighbors.
you can't ever be too sure. My biggest fear is home invasion. I worry about ym daughter and her saftey.

Ours came with the house. I didn't grow up with one...so I don't think it is necessary. And plus, we have 2 dogs.

I don't think it is necessary but I think it is a no brainer for us. My DH often works late and it makes me feel better having it. i couldn't imagine living without it. We also have the fire/smoke detector with the alarm system.

I don't think so. If someone is really going to get in, they're gonna find a way.

Re: spinoff: do you think alarm systems are neccessary
I am in the alarm business (please dont FM me for install info - my business does not install) ANYWAY - I am here to say that YES - you need an alarm. It will not stop intruders per se...but isn't it nice when you come home that you know the alarm is still on and no one is in your house...that you are safe, and that your family is protected.
With a good alarm system you should also have smoke/fire/carbon monoxide detectors hooked up - this way even if you can't call the police (for example if you are passed out) they will still come - it could be a life saver (that function should work even when the alarm is not activated).

I feel the same way. Never had an alarm system growing up, don't have one now.
