Who do you use

We will most likely be moving in next week.Chat Icon Chat Icon So now I am looking into calling for utility hook up.

Who do you use for:

Cable/phone/ internet
Propane
Oil
Electric
Water

And if you do not mind telling, how much do you pay for the service.

Sorry for so many questions, but this is all new to me. Especially we will be moving from Queens to Suffolk. Lindenhurst to be exact.

TIA.

You have a few options depending upon where you live and your preferences...

Cable- Cablevision but when we move we will be switching to satellite.

Phone/internet- Verizon.

You can get all three combined using a special Cable vision package but there are serious drawbacks to that package... pricing is only for one year. you can call them but read the FINE print. We are not doing it because their phone lines cannot be traced by the 911 system and God forbid if an emergency happened...

Oil- right now Meenan but not sure yet with the new house. My Dad has joined an oil buying group and they get a discount over the going market rate... 1-800-OIL-HEAT you have to pay a $25 yearly membership fee which you will save in no time. I will be shopping around for this soon.

Electric is LIPA- there are a few towns (Ex. Freeport, I think) that have their own small power comp. but otherwise they, like Con Ed for the city, are a monopoly and we have no choice.

Water goes by your local water company. Check with the previous owners or call the county and ask according to your address.

Cable: Directv
phone: Verizon
internet: Cablevision
Propane: LILCO (i think)
Oil: Slomins
Electric: LIPA
Water: NY Water Service

Our alarm company told us not to use internet or cable phone systems, they requested that we keep our land line.

Why did they say this was a requirement?

They didn't say it was a requirement, but they said that this was their preference, you need to have a lot more equipment installed at your home to support the internet/cable phone systems. Plus they feel that these systems go out in storms more easily than phone lines. I don't know about that, we just figured that the systems is working now so why screw around with it. KWIM?

Oh, and I know it's working now b/c I accidently tripped it a few weeks ago and the police showed up at my doorstep. LOL.

Still can't do it. My father has one of those "I've fallen and can't get up" buttons and the company that issues it still cannot trace the cable numbers as of this past Monday.

This must be different. If you visit http://www.optimumvoice.com/ you'll see OptVoice offers E-911.

Re: Who do you use

For those of you who have different services for the cable/ phone / internet, did you find it cheaper using all different services or combining 1 or 2 of the services?

By using 3 different services, it's definately not cheaper, but I wanted Directv b/c I got used to some channels on Time Warner cable when we lived in Queens that Cablevision doesn't offer (mainly BBC America) and we wanted cable internet since it's faster than DSL, but satellite internet was crazy expensive (at least when we looked into it 2 years ago). And like I said, our alarm company requested that we keep our landline, so that's why we have 3 different.
