pulling up carpet?
is this easy to do? the house we are buying has carpeting up the staircase and in the upstairs of the house (high ranch) that we want to rip up and lay hardwood floors. actually, we may have to lay in one area, refinish in another. do we have to rip up the carpet before we get an estimate on the floors or can they give us an estimate with the carpeting still down?

Re: pulling up carpet?
We pulled up carpet from our living room/dining room and it was pretty easy just a pain getting all the staples out. You could probably get an estimate for installation with the carpet still down. We just got measured for hardwood floors and our guy just came and measured.

Re: pulling up carpet?
We are getting our hardwood floors done this week. I got quotes from places w/o even having them come to the house - just giving dimensions! (we just closed on Friday - the lady wouldn't let us in the house - but that's a whole other story!) We got quotes with "lift and removal" of carpet, but as it turns out, DH and others were able to rip up all the carpet this weekend and we just won't end up having to pay that extra cost.

Re: pulling up carpet?
We just ripped up two rooms. It was easy. You may want to call your town to inquire about garbage pickup. We had to cut and roll ours up in 4 ft strips. If I didn't call, who knows how DH would have tore it up!

Re: pulling up carpet?
We just got an estimate over the phone (per sq. ft.). We have a hi-ranch too and had all the floors done on the upper level.

Re: pulling up carpet?
Just be careful because asbetos was used in some carpet glues a few years back.
